Never thought about it before but what is the D on the edge of the penalty area for?

No player can stand within it before the ball is struck, when a penalty is being taken. Edit: Second half of sentence added. In extra time.

I always thought it applied only to penalties when players not taking the kick had to stand outside it until the ball was struck.

Apart from the Goalkeeper and the penalty taker no one else is allowed in the penalty area before the kick is taken. All the other players have to be more than ten yards from the penalty spot. The D marks the area of the remaining pitch that is less than ten yards from the spot- so no player should be within it- effectively an extension of the penalty area.

My understanding - you have to be 10yrds away from the penalty kick. Draw a 10yrd radius circle from penalty spot then part of the circle (ie the D) comes outside of the area by 4 yrds. Penalty area is 18yrds, penalty spot is 12 yrds, therefore if my maths is correct then distance from penalty spot to edge of the area is only 6 yrds. So if you stood on the edge of the area directly behind the penalty spot you would only be 6yrds away from the dead ball.

Doesn't the 'D' mark the world record distance for a toilet roll thrown by supporters behind the goal?

A few weeks ago I watched at Stoke as a freekick was taken right from the line of the D. The idiot ref then paced ten steps to mark where the wall should be. It wasn't on the penalty spot, the bloody clown.

It's where the A500 got it's name from. If you look at where the old Victoria ground was, it was realised that a ley line ran through the penalty area/'D' to the (then) newly constructed A500. The power derived from this line is the reason there is never any congestion on that section of road and it's said that in the depths of night you can still hear the clatter of Smithy on an oppositions striker's ankles.

It's threads like these that make a referees and linesmans job impossible.

oh I thought it was were the referee used to bring players to so he could talk to them about his decisions hence the D = Decision time

Yup, this. 10 yard distance between a dead-ball and opposing player, hence the centre circle for kick off and the small lines on the perimeter of the pitch near the corners (top left of the following image) st.depositphotos.com/1618578/2347/i/450/depositphotos_23476815-stock-photo-green-artificial-turf-football-and.jpg

It helps forwards (and defenders) work out which way they are kicking, as it mirrors the half of the centre circle from their own (or the oppositions) defensive half...
