Looking at going to Brazil for 2 weeks in either late august / october.
Will be going with First Choice and the chances are will be going on the 3 or 4 day Rio trip before the relaxation of a resort near Salvador.
Rio has always come across as a pretty dangerous city, but looking in to it more it seems to be like most big cities in the world. Be careful where you go at night and you'll be fine.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Been to Ipanema in Rio- great place, unbelievable looking women and very safe.
Cocacabana can be cheeky at night and seems to be the tourist trap- avoid if I was you.
Both are pretty close but completely different.
Enjoy- one of my favourite ever places visited.

I have been. It's a fantastic country but it's virtually lawless. The chances of you getting robbed ( as I was), are extremely high. Ipanema is as bad as anywhere else as it's full of tourists. Tourists = cash & valuables. The locals are dirt poor and will steal anything. Sorry to put a downer on it, but that's the way it is. If you do decide to go, take an organized tour and stay with the group.

not Rio.. but Curitiba and the falls at Igaucu ....as part of an independant trip to s america
As for iffy crossed from Brazil to Ciudad del Este, Paraguay via the friendhsip bridge (illegally on the back of a motorbike as that was safest ) .. Ciudad del Este, now that place is truly dangerous - the most lawless city I've been...

It's twinned with Liverpool then?

brazil is a place i would never go to. 2 of my friends travelled there a couple of years ago. both were mugged after a night in a bar. one of them ended up in a hospital which he described as "hell on earth." these lads have been on every continent and have been to a LOT of different countries. brazil was their least favourite!

I've got a couple of friends who spent a couple of weeks in Rio and as most have said on here, it's a great City, but be very, very careful ...... gun crime is rife, and the Police are apparenly a little on the corrupt side to say the least.

Have been to every continent myself and like I said never had a problem in Rio. Like every city you have to be careful and Ipanema had a great deal of tourist police- went out every night and was fine I never listen to other's stories too much to be honest- you can find trouble anywhere in the world. Much rather find out for myself than listen to second hand stories , I remember so many trying to put me off going but the one person I met who'd actually been to Ipanema couldn't speak highly enough about the place. Gun crime is rife in say Cambodia and been there a dozen times. Just use your loaf. Of course you'd never hear of muggings etc in say Stoke or Manchester would you Is a beautiful place Homerj

Choose your times carefully. Junction 1 on the M5 can be quite congested.

Soi You seem to be in the minority I'm a well traveled man (I've even been to your (old?) bar in BKK) and am always careful about where i'm walking and at what time... But I reckon we might give Rio a miss. I'd do it on my own... but don't reckon the misses would fancy it. Cheers HJR (formerly Hednesford_Stokie) PS - I was planned to come back out to BKK for a couple of weeks next month but I've just had it stopped as I'm needed in a much more exotic place... Kettering

I've been to various cities including Rio, Sao Paulo and Brasilia. I felt least safe in Rio. People in my hotel at Copacabana were mugged at knife point on the beach. I had my credit card cloned at a restaurant in Rio, which resulted in £3,000 worth of internal flight tickets appearing on my account a year later. I think tourists can be at risk, so be careful. That said, the women are fantastic!

Yes I've been to Rio 6 times and a couple of trips to Sao Paulo and Recife. I was lucky to be with the exgf who is Brazilian. Absolutely love to visit. Great people, food and drink. Do not be put off by the crime but take all the usual precautions and then some. Get travel insurance and stay is places that are in tourist areas. Do not rent a car! Learn some Portuguese it will really help.
When you hit the beach go the the baraca (sp?: they rent chairs, umbrellas etc.) they will hook you up with whatever you need and you pay for it all at the end of the day. Tip VERY well and it will really go along way... never forget that you are extremely wealthy compared to the average Brazilian, be generous but not showy. Watch out for hookers... the hottest girl you've ever seen will approach you and speak English.. she'll then bring in the real deal.. be careful we watched this go on all day in Ipanema and we could understand what the girls were saying but the men were clueless..
I'm jealous I want to go back. Brazilian girls rock.
