West Brom are often considered to be our closest rival or competitor in terms of location, size and potential, and besides the Derby nature of our meetings they are challenging us this season to be the top Midlands club. Also, they are led by our former successful Manager, Tony Pulis, who at the moment is certainly having an impact over there. In short, comparisons between our clubs can be a useful indicator to current status and progress.
Yesterday WBA had a good 3-1 win over Watford and today are 8th in the table, one place and one point above us. In terms of rivalry and the effect on performances could this unexpected battle for position help our performances and spur us on to new heights. In fact if the season goes well we could end the campaign fighting West Brom for a European place.
Do the club and players feel this rivalry and can it be significant in helping shape our season, or is it just a case of acknowledging another club doing well, and focusing purely on Stoke's results and performances. whatever anyone else does?

Couldn't give a shit about the Albion. As soon as Pulis reaches 40 pts they'll fall off the edge of the cliff and we will finish above them.

.A lot of similarities in size of fan base, financial resources, history ,insecurity as division 2 was not that long ago..loved the games against West Bromwich as we both got promoted. I never thought I'd see Stoke in the prem, never mind the fa cup final or europe so Pulis is a legend but as they are finding out now it's predictable football that will keep you secure vs the exciting expansive game we see now ..fingers crossed our game can achieve more than 9th, whereas I don't think Pulis'S team can..

Good motivation.
Get into Jan/Feb leading the pack. See who's got the appetite (and squad depth) to get into the mid 50 point range.

Leicester, as shite as they are, are only 2 wins behind us. West Brom are shite as well.

To a neutral in his 60's you stand out as 2 good teams with a long history but both get poor home gates for some reason although Wba do seem to take more away. But isn't one big difference in the success though? Wba 4 or 5 FA cups? I certainly remember one of them and also Champions of england at least once?

"succes" for each is a long time ago. However for Stoke it is only 44 years since they won a major trophy, whilst it is 48 years since West Brom won an FA Cup.

Why were all the Albion fans dressed up as blue plastic seats again on Saturday?

Why were all the Albion fans dressed up as blue plastic seats again on Saturday? Like that one. But it does make for a great away day in a couple of months time. I for one am looking forward to it. It takes me back to the macari era. All be it in a different league

Our home gates are actually one of the best in prem - percentage of capacity sold out wise. As for the Baggies away following, well, simply put they took the smaller allocation when they came up to us a few months ago, which is frankly embarrassing when geographically we are the closest team to them this season. We sold out Boro, Man Utd, West Ham, Arsenal, Liverpool. Only really struggled to take numbers down to Watford (sunday 12pm) and up to Hull - quite something for a club of our fanbase to be perfectly honest.

Strangely the BBC Football Gossip column this morning has an item regarding Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriques as Transfer targets for Stoke Boss Tony Pulis. According to the Telegraph. And their reporters get paid for this "insider knowledge?

No it will not spur Stoke on, why should it? Pulis is a good manager and while he's with the baggies they wont go down. His team will not finish above us though.

“If you look at the last eight or nine years, in terms of pounds per points gained as a manager, I’m top of that as well – but I don’t like to talk about it.”
hahaha. Reminds me of the Harry Enfield sketch of the radio DJ's > He does a lot of good work charity, but he doesnt like to talk about it > GREAAAT

Stoke are pretty much sold out at the moment. 27,503 was the average attendance last season against a capacity is 27,902 (reduced from 28,387 with the segregation in the south stand). Filling in the south east corner over the summer should boost attendances. Capacity at the Hawthorns is 26,850 (according to Wikipedia) although their average last year was 24,631. I'm not sure how that gets affected by the segregation on the away end. West Brom certainly beat us when it comes to trophies and seasons in the top flight. Other than that we've followed a very similar pattern over the last 30 years (bar the late 90s / turn of the century when we dropped to the Second Division and they went up to the Premiership for a bit).

“If you speak to people at Stoke and ask: ‘Would you have preferred Tony to finish in the top 10 or take us to a Cup final and finish in the last 16 in Europe and go to Valencia and places likes that’, I know what they’d say.”
Shame you shit the bed though, isn't it Tone? More belittling of Hughes' job. Arrogant prick.

They're never going to be our biggest rivals, but we've got a lot of history with West Brom and size-wise we're both very similar clubs.
Since the rest of the midlands clubs have shit the bed in recent years, they're all we've got (and visa versa).

Tony Pulis is not and will never be OVER not being Stoke City boss and having Peter Coates as his Chairman. It's as clear as day that he is still GUTTED at being sacked.
It's all his own fault.
