I was always allowed a drink as a kid at family events and stuff, from about five I was allowed to have half a glass of wine with a meal or something... Then when I was about eleven my dad would occasionally buy me the odd can of bitter if he went to the shop... And cider was discovered soon after... I first got hammered at about thirteen, and haven't looked back since. First time I went to a pub without parents would be when I was about sixteen and went to the Weathervane... Then the first time I went to a club would have been when I was sixteen as well, after watching Idlewild at the Viccy Hall I was buzzing to have got into the Sugarmill without ID.

In the mid to late 60's we used to play footie on summer evenings on Wolstanton Marsh opposite the Christadelphian Hall. We'd then sneak around the side of the Wulstan Arms to the off licence counter where we could get a pint....those were the days. Then in 68 Wulstan won Daily Express pub of the north competition and it stopped as all eyes were now watching so we buggered off up top marsh where we could do the same at Cricketers Arms. Most of us were 14-15 yrs old.

Always used to have a sneaky pull on my old man's pint, when we were on holiday.(Fair play to him that it was the only time he had a beer in the year-until we were old enough to look after ourselves-before he used to go out with my mum on a regular basis.) Got drunk at 14 with my mates on a keg(talking 2.5 litres nowerdays)of scrumpy cider from Wass's market(Remember that?).Vowed never again. After that we are talking The Woodman in Hanley for my first proper legal pint.

About half ten.
Oh ever you mean? I was 15 in the old Merlin Tavern (now the Shalimar Indian restaurant) in Castle with some mates from school.
Although my dad fed me three bottles of Bock when I was 13 on a trip to the Algarve and I was bladdered. Cheers dad, just to let you know that as I soon enter my 36th year, I'm keeping your influence alive!

Isle of Wight Butlins Holiday camp. The old man brought me half and told me get it down me sharpish before my mother come back, think I was 12 but sat under the table necking it while he shielded me. Later on the first time properly was when the bulls head in Castle was an Irish pub. Me and my mate thought we would try our luck one Friday night after just turning 17. Bouncer goes "one in one out". Instead of just doing it my mate starts argueing with him to which this bouncer goes "how old are you lads you should know that statement by now". We were mouthy buggers but we got in and even pulled . Didn't beer taste better though back in the days when you were too young to drink it or is it that the quality of ale might have been better in those days?
