Was hoping for a bit more - thats being generous.
UC has earnest and intellectual contestants on every week and at least half of them look like 1970s bookworms - thats half the fun.
There is at least one comedy contestant every other week - this is an average example which has been picked up and 'memed'
Weve just hired a Mexican housemaid, and she gets 15-20 questions every week, on UC, or 'desafio de la universidad' as she insists on calling it.

When was the last time that a contestant from Stoke on Trent appeared on University Challenge? Has there ever been one?

Yes, but not representing our local seats of learning.
In university terms, Keele have been featured but not Staffordshire University.
Our housekeeper Consuela, studied at the Universidad de Guadalajara, one of the best in the country.
She applied to go on the mexican version , and got through to the qualifiers but didnt get to the televised final . The show over there isnt a literal translation, something like "The Unversity who Achieves as High as The Magic Balloon Gang"

Forgive me for being nosey, but what's her story, is that a typical outcome for Mexican graduates? I respect her profession, but it seems unusual by European perspective.

As opposed to 80% of our graduates working in tesco & call centres?

She is studying part time at a local university, and working to pay her tuition fees. She is very intelligent and ambitious. She intends to return to Mexico once qualified and become, in her own words "El Primo Presidente Hembra, Reverso Trump"
