 Struggling to name a few from this picture. Back row 2 on the end to the right of Dave Mcaughtrie. Player inbetween Mcaughtrie and Big Bren. Player inbetween Loek Ursem and Tony Lacey Front row i can only name Ian Painter(between Hampton and Griffiths) and Chris Maskery and Steve Parkin on the end. Anyone know? |

The player in between O'Callaghan and McAughtrie is Steve Ford, a striker who only made a couple of appearances.
The rest are youth team players. No idea who they are.
Edit: Carl Saunders to the left of Ian Painter.

Lumsden top left ? . 4th one along front row Johns ?. Didnt we get to the youth cup final that year?. I remember Chris Maskery winning a penalty competition in front of the Boothen end ( season 78/79) think it was Cambridge .

Roger Johns was the name i remember as well mate. Big Bren and Foxey are to this day still my favourite ever Stoke players. What a season that was.

The goalkeeper next to Fox is Harrison we brought him from vale.The younger player top right Phil Heath, On the bottom row Steve Parkin,Carl Saunders,Chis Maskery.
the staff are Tony Lacey,Bill Aspery ,Richie Barker, and Mike Ford.

Sutton had a decent career at Leek Town and could have gone back into the professional game but was earning a better salary at the tax office. |

No Alan Dodd on this picture,if it was taken before November 1982 he was still at the club.His testimonial was April 1982 but he still played for us in 82/3 season.

This was the era as a young lad where my Stoke supporting Career properly took off, unfortunately just as the major decline took hold.. I clearly remember seeing & hearing the day Grandstands classified results section confirmed we'd been relegated from the First Division. Was absolutely gutted to hear that news and never imagined at that point we'd remain in the doldrums for so long. Whilst understanding the actual relegation side of things, the circumstances as to how/why were so bad are abit more fuzzy.
As this 82-83 squad looked so promising with a good mix of experience and youth where did it all go round & how did we become so poor. Was it poor decisions at board level, the overall squad not being good enough or did the combination of Bill Asprey & Richie Barker lead to our downfall..

Loved the games i went to in this season. Even though i went in 1980 these are the first i remember. Gives me yet another chance to mention the 5-2 against west ham. Great game. Chambo was excellent. Good side we were.
