I'm struggling to come up with an answer.
It's like we've got some very good players but the actual team going out has no balance and is a mish mash of unpredictable players.
At the moment we seem to be stuck between 4231 and 433 but I'm not sure that they're the answer.
422 seems to be the current "in" formation but I'm not sure that we have the players to make that work.
I think that the biggest problem is that our "big" name players cant all play together but it's almost like because of the money invested in them MH is scared of dropping them.
We maybe need to get some 7 out of 10 "week in week out players" to give us more energy and balance as to many of big name players go missing.
Another Jo Allen clone would be perfect
If we go 4231 something like
..............Jack............
Glen.....Ryan......New.....New
........Allen......New........
..New....Shaq or Bojan..Arni..
..............New.............
433
..............Jack............
Glen.....Ryan.......New....New
....Allen....Imbula....New....
...Shaq.......New......Arni...
442
..............Jack............
Glen.....Ryan.......New....New
..Shaq...Allen....New...Arni..
.........Diouf....New.........

Agree re the dilemma but that is a lot of new players.......new striker and centre half will help but the midfield is still a conundrum?

My team, based on current personnel would be 4-3-3.
Butland Johnson, Ryan, muniesa, pieters Whelan, Allen, Adam Shaqiri, diouf, Arnie
In an ideal world, I'd want a pacy wide player instead of Shaq, a reliable partner for a fully fit Ryan and probably a better forward...preferably a 28 year old Ricardo Fuller.

Not for one moment suggesting that you are wrong though mate, just putting it into some sort of context. I for one certainly think that there are question marks starting to arise over, just what exactly is Hughes attempting to achieve specifically with his signings.

Les has come in and tried to rebuild the squad from front to back, right or not I've always believed good teams are built from the back.

Spending little, our manager produced a good side capable of some good positive football. Given license to spend, things seem to be going backwards. Its a different approach yet a similar scenario as befell us under the previous manager. Frustrating and I've no idea, where we go from here. The expensive arrivals have made us worse but having spent that money it seems unlikely that the manager will backtrack for the reasons you suggest. Our marquee signings don't deserve a place in the team in truth. Bojan, shaqiri and imbula are doing little to justify their price tags or reputations

I know this is a bit controversial as all the emphasis has been on CB and CB but I actually think we're very short in midfield. At the moment we have
Allen Imbula Adam Whelan
Fighting for 2 spots (not sure you can include Geoff and Muni)
Of those 4 only Allen for me is fit for purpose and what we need. The others all have strengths but huge limitations too
Imbula- Great running from deep but no defensive awareness. Suited to a 3 than 2
Adam - Big hearted, great shot and passer but not mobile and not great discipline.
Whelan - Works hard and good engine but slow, to negative and struggles in possession.
I really think we need another Allen type who is good both defensively and going forward so that he can play with Allen in a 2 or Allen and Imbula in a 3. If we could get someone like Loftus Cheek on loan they'd be perfect.

I for one certainly think that there are question marks starting to arise over, just what exactly is Hughes attempting to achieve specifically with his signings. The question around the quality of Hughes's transfer dealings is definitely rearing its head. He appears to be able to spot bargains, Arnie, Wollscheid (at today's prices), Afellay, Pieters (recent dip in form apart) and Bojan, but he has struggled with big fees - the jury is out on Shaq, Imbula, Joselu for sure, though Allen looks like money well spent. The result is games like today when he seems to be trying to fit names in and we end up with Bojan and Imbula in positions that significantly reduced their effectiveness. The strategy on signings doesn't seem to be linked to the team, we appear to be adding players without being clear where they will play. I like Berahino's but I believe our need is for a dominant focal point we can play around. As it stands we have Butland Johnson Shaw or Wolly New CB, Pieters Allen, new Cdm Bojan New winger New CF Arnie For now I would have Whelan, Shaq and Diouf in the gaps but think we need better. I would also be keen to get two young, fast full backs

Arnis very different as even when he has off days like today he still works his boots off. For me we can only play 1 or 2 of the 3 mentioned or the opposition will have the sort of space they did today. If someone offered the opportunity of having a good DM in exchange for one of the 3 mentioned I'd snap there hands off.

I'm not sure imbula has the personality to realise his undoubted potential and I just don't get Shaq. We still have a massive shaped Steven n'zonzi shaped hole in our team and perhaps even more than injury, this hole is the reason bojan is yet to look the same player that he was pre injury.

I think the system is 4-2-3-1.
I think we have a settled first 11, and swap like for like, Bobby Robson style.
So... That makes the first 11:
BUTLAND JOHNSON - SHAWCROSS - WOLLSHIED - PIETERS ALLEN - IMBULA SHAQ - BOJAN - SOBHI ARNIE
and the like for like subs:
GIVEN BARDS - SWEENEY - TIEXEIRA - MUNIESA WHELAN - CAMERON WALTERS - ADAM - SHENTON DIOUF OR JOSELU
Which kind of shows why we need a new CB and CF.
but if I could buy new players, that first 11 would become:
BUTLAND BARDSLEY - JONES - SWEENEY - PIETERS ALLEN - MUNIESA SHAQ - IMBULA - ARNIE BERAHINO
As you can see, I really rate Sobhi, think Ryan and Whelan, whilst brilliant, are getting on a bit, and Bojan is a super sub

I have absolutely no clue where you fit the likes of imbula, bojan, shaqiri, allen into the same side and strike the same balance.
At times we have 4 players all looking to do creative things in the middle in front of the opposition area. Groups of player bunched together with no width or movement and leaving us wide open.
Its a fucking mess

To answer your question, I donk think Leslie knows at present which is a worry. Yesterday was a shambles tactically and nearly all players look completley lost. We are not a very flexible team who can change formation.

We don't look like a team at all, a group of expensively assembled individuals who look like they have no idea what they are supposed to be doing, maybe the coaching revelation exposed by Wilson was based on truth.

Don't forget that supporters don't generally understand the "finer" points of tactics, players etc. A good friend today suggested that Leslie has bought a mixture of jigsaw pieces that simply don't fit. Seems to fit a lot of thoughts from the paying public

4-3-3 how we are.
Our problenm is Arnautovic performs well at left inside but Shaqiri (imo) is proving a poor signing I'd be happy to see him sold tbh. We can't go 4-4-2 unless they swap sides. Bojan is a good player, Hughes just isn't getting the best out of this group. For me a better system would be to use a Benteke type player up top with Bojan just behind, fuck the inside forward strategy off, get crosses in and have Bojan feeding off the knock downs & dictating the play between their lines. This inside forwards stuff is shit. Bojan Krkic is a top quality player and he looks average under Hughes.
For the umpteenth time we need full backs with a good engine and crossing ability.
Do the above and add a couple of signings and I'd like to see 4-2-3-1. At the start of the window I'd of had this in mind with these signings, 2 attacking fullbacks that can cross, 1 two direct winger(Townsend) & 1 inside (Arnie) that could rotate during the game. Left foot Blind to partner Shawcross that would also be great Whelan or Allen replacement. Agile & skillfull Bojan in & around Benteke feeding off pieces, in box for crosses and playmaking. Benteke has good service. It would of been a winner. Hughes is losing the fucking script imo. Expensive yes, but so is fucking relegation. I'd of gone for townsend over Shaqiri anyday, I'd of not bought Imbula and kept Adam. The manager has spent big money though & made his bed so what's the script Les, you bought them?

So much talent going to waste under this shit system, all this waiting for Berahino is bollocks, it means Hughes will stick to the same shit.
Says it all when the supporters can't even decide on what is best that is also effective
