"Adam and Diouf were just playing their natural game" - agreed. They were more "up for it" than some other players. "neither of made tackles that would have got them sent off imo." - I said "could easily ... in the Prem." not "would have". Adam retaliated after a foul on him and went after the guy to hack him down (that's what I saw on my fuzzy screen) And Diouf had his feet high twice in succession. Closer examination on replay showed it wasn't as bad as it first appeared, but a ref in the Prem. without a replay and >30,000 spectators howling "foul!" could easily have weakened and sent him off, particularly if the "injured" players had made a big meal of it. "As I said, you'd only do this to Wolly if you hated him." - I don't hate Wolly. I have actually blown hot and cold on him* and said on here he is the classic example of "you're only as good as your last game". He had some good games for us last season, but last night I thought he was our worst player by a considerable margin. * I thought he did well when he joined us, thrown into the deep end against Arsenal, then he struggled and I started to doubt, but was prepared to give him time, then he improved and put in some good performances (with the odd mistake/error), but his performances fell away towards the end of the season. IMO. I honestly want him to succeed, as I do all Stoke players and don't hate any of them. It was the Royal you! That let's me off then!Diouf and Adam are playing for a place and both of them put in good displays. The only ott challenge on the night I thought was the one on Pieters. The rest were just tackles in a good competitive friendly. We'll just have to agree to differ.

The Sentinel have the entire game up. HereI see what some of yis mean about the quality of last night's stream (although it does get better, then worse, then better, then worse again) Training spin sort of game. Nothing much to be learned as many looked very rusty. Hope nobody got injured.

Positives Bojan looks ridiculously sharp. Diouf looks a threat Adam for 60 minutes was Adam at his best. Shawcross and Butland played 90 minutes. And we beat a side half way through their season who are going to be way fitter than us. Negatives 3-5-2. Irrespective of the result and it being a friendly this isn't for us and the players we have. It exposes them all and is just dire. That's about it really! Positives - fitness and no injuries its a glorified kick about Negatives - your constant fucking whining on threads such as this one. "3 at the back is wank", "this defending needs to stop now". Your knowledge of friendlies seems to be up there with your knowledge of how a transfer actually works..... Bayern was voted "most odious twat" on the Oatcake in a straw poll by Stokies in Long Doggers. Congrats! 😎

Did we really play 3-5-2? Was that with full backs, or wingers? We only have one defender who can defend, so I can't understand that at all.

Suppose it's the ideal time to find out the system doesn't work. It is but we still haven't really got to grips with the system we do play. 😂 I've never quite the nailed the system we do play. OK I get how it sets out, but can't pin how for example we're supposed to score goals. I have noticed the slow and ponderous approach and constant passing back and sideways. Surely that's not the plan?

So if we ever do click or work out what the plan is gid help the rest of the league. Also i have the fleeting suspicion that other teams have plans and tactics designed to counter our which sometimes work and sometimes dont i could be erong though as im not an expert on such matters like some on here

We lined up 3-5-2, with Muniesa on the left and Wolly on the right. I thought Muniesa played OK and not much got past on that side. Wolly is way too slow in a back three - they exposed him all night and a poor back pass to Butland almost resulted in a goal. Having said that their goal did come from the right. I was on the side at the other end so couldn't see that end too well. However, it looked like they cut through the defense fairly easily. It wasn't always clear who was supposed to be up front with Diouf. Sometimes it was Bojan, sometime Arni - maybe that was plan. I was amazed by Charlie - he looked knackered after the warm up; but covered a lot of ground for 60 minutes and faded at the end. Three at the back will be disaster in the PL with Wolly on the right, especially because Johnson didn't track back to help out. Pieters and Muniesa on the left worked better together.

Don't point out that Wolly is pretty crap, he needs more time to settle in a new country ![(whistle)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/u7JMveaFGUL6du8bflWQ.gif) , Hughes has to sign a proper reliable CB urgently we can not afford to start with him in our starting line up.

So it was Pieters and Johnson on the 'wings', then? Where will Shaq and Arnie fit into that? That's correct. With Pieters and Johnson on the wings, that leaves three CM players. Yesterday it was Imbulla, Adam and Bojan, with Diouf and Arni up front. Bojan and Arni seemed to switch off, but Adam and Bojan ran the midfield. Imbulla looked a bit lost. In the second half they subbed Crouch and Joselu up front, but they didn't seem to combine much. Crouch was busier than Joeslu but never looked like scoring. I can't see them playing that formation often unless they get a much more mobile CB to play on Shawcross's right side. Johnson made a couple of runs - it would have been interesting to see how Bardsley could play as the right wing back but he wasn't on for very long. Biggest positive for me was Shawcross who looked sharp and didn't appear to have any obvious back issues.

So it was Pieters and Johnson on the 'wings', then? Where will Shaq and Arnie fit into that? Commentators kept saying that we played a 3-4-3. From what I could tell Bojan was given a free role, Arnie was in his usual position, but with Pieters pushing up closer to him. It looked unbalanced with the right looking light on numbers. {# A friendly} Johnson played like a conventional winger and huge holes appeared behind him. -------------------Butland------------------- -------Wollscheid Shawcross Muniesa---------- ----------------Imbula Adam Pieters------------ -----------Johnson Bojan Arnautovic------------- -------------------Diouf------------------------ Was how it looked to me {though it obviously isn't bar football.} it was late, and a dodgy stream. Wooly wasn't a disaster but he was exposed and against better opponents undoubtedly it'd be chaos. Nevertheless it's an interesting experiment and has it's merits. Certainly needs refining and practice. Johnson dropping back a bit more and Whelan/Allen to mop up and fill the gaps and it's not the spawn of the Devil. Better left wing back and a more mobile RCB and we'd be bob on for it. That's probably not happening but I still think we've got players who could adapt. We looked like we could swamp midfield and created plenty of width and chances. Any system relies on movement, where we're at in preseason and an exhibition it's difficult to judge. Re Shaqiri. It's a head scratcher whether the BMX thing could work in a 352. Dunno, if Arnie became the striker {which I'm not convinced by} it could work, but it's either him, Bojan or Arnie {unless he could come on for Johnson}. mmm. It's an option, it wasn't a very convincing version of it last night. It was a work out. Looking forward to seeing us unleash it in a dour stalemate.
