Stoke City is now a very attractive job. We'd get the pick of some good managers. We would but Coates, senior, only wants a British manager which narrows the field. It is amazing how quickly we can issue British passports when the good of the country is at Stake! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/0m0lbCuTEBzaRn6f8QaM.gif)

Everton will probably go big for Pelligrini If I were in their position (with a big new majority investor on board) Pellegrini would be my choice.

no not at all mate but i'm confused by some of the posters who now seem convinced that we're definitely going to lose him and are already discussing replacements (and i think it's those same posters that Dave was referring to). most of us have just been discussing the "Would he be right to go..would it be a sideways step or a move forward in his career?" etc IF he was actually offered it (and at this stage it's a big leap to go from this article to him actually being offered the job) but some have come out and told us the players we'll now lose when he DOES go and who it is that Coates will bring in and how badly we'll play as a consequence. it's those latter comments that bemuse when it's just a standard "Manager who's done well at 1 club could interest another" article. So... we are ok to discuss "will he go?" but not "who will replace him if he goes?" Is that correct? no it's not correct and it's literally nothing like what i've just said ![(slaphead)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/x7GhxArXJzjvmIlugu2X.gif) try reading it for once eh instead of getting all pissy when you clearly haven't! to make it clear and really simple for you: should we discuss would he go? of course are people bound to ask who would be a suitable replacement? of course is it fucking daft to decide he's definitely going, decide who Coates is therefore definitely going to replace him with, decide which players are definitely now leaving because of his departure and what style of football we will then revert to purely on the basis on an article that says they might be interested in Hughes? 100% yes!

It's an unusual one for us. Our manager being linked to other clubs, quite flattering in a way.
Apart from Macari, who left us for Celtic which other managers have left us for a job elsewhere ? We usually end up sacking them !
P.S. I have erased the quitter from my memory and he didn't leave to manage elsewhere so he doesn't count !

An Everton is a bigger stepping stone for a really big club though. Doing a good job there gets you noticed more than it does here. But how long does a manager need to be at a 'stepping stone club' to get poached by one of the giants? Hughes is arguably hardly half way through getting Stoke to really challenge for anything major, and lets face it, bar a favourable draw or two, even the FA Cup or the Europa is obviously still ever so slightly out of reach, so, what, five, six seasons or more at a 'stepping stone club'? That's a third of a career for any half decent manager with the potential to go big. if Hughes went to Everton, how quickly would he have to make a significant impact before he is being courted by, say, Arsenal or a big European club? If he managed Everton, could he then go on to manage Liverpool? As he's managed Man City, could he go to Old Trafford? And if he did, how old or hungry would be by then? There are managers that stay loyal, there are managers that peak with promotion into the top division, there are war horses like Alladyce and increasingly Pulis and then there are managers like Hughes with good contacts, a good footballing brain, respected as such but aren't quite at the pinnacle of the game. I see no real benefit for Hughes, if we was being selfish or more ambitious to go to Everton. He would going back to square one from Stoke.

He wouldn't be going back to square one, he'd be at a bigger club with bigger expectations and more eyes on him. I don't quite understand the 'how long' argument. It'd become apparently pretty quickly whether he was going to do well there or not, and if he did really well, I'd finished top 4 and/or won something, he'd very much put himself back on the big boys' radar.

Only a few comments here and they seem to be split, I'd be very surprised if he left for Everton, too similar to man city haven't Everton just been taken over by some multi billionaire oil tycoon or something similar ? You'd have thought he'd learned his lesson the first time around. There are very few chairmen like PC in this league that back the manger through the tough times as well as showing some serious investment, didn't PC say Imbula was just the start. MH is 3rd longest serving manger in the league after only 2 years and has great security at Stoke as well as the backing to push us into Europe over the next few years a project that's already well under way. Everton might now have the money but it also comes with a foreign owner who will be more demanding, fans that are more demanding and a project that needs starting from scratch. Realistically can he achieve anything more at Everton that he can't at Stoke ? Regardless it's all lazy journalism that's come about from Keys comments earlier in the week. www.toffeetalk.com/index.php?/topic/27682-if-martinez-goes-who-should-get-the-nod/page-19#

Surely a side ways move for Hughes and if we are honest is Hughes any better than what they already have, maybe a little but neither have proved to be world beaters, both have done reasonable jobs in former management and both have had their shockers too. Both managers struggle to build their own successful teams and are naive tactically.

If he didn't make that immediate impact, then what? The day managers start chasing rainbows as often as footballers do we are all stuffed. I'm not talking club loyalty - I'm not that naive - but a commitment to taking things forward over a number of seasons.

But who knows when that chance will come again?
Modern football is short termist.
Managers, like players, shouldn't have ambition held against them.

Mark is still building Stoke. He has recently signed an extended contract. Clayton Wood is being extended and the stadium developed. The club is in great financial shape. The team despite the last few games are progressing. He is going nowhere. Just pure speculation.

Hughes would a logical fit for Everton, and John Cross claims insider access to Everton's shortlist of potential Martinez replacements, but I reckon Benitez would be a better option for them, largely because Hughes is a more logical fit for us.
And Everton can fuck off, as well.

Both managers struggle to build their own successful teams and are naive tactically. Hughes led a blackburn side whose only ambition was to avoid relegation into a top 6 finish, just 4 points below the Champions League spots, & a Europa League Quarter finals. That was & remains one of the greatest managerial accomplishments in the premier league. Surely more than just a reasonable job. He had a shocker at QPR but then again so did 'Arry. The club is just terribly run.

Must admit I thought it was all pie in the sky but it really is gathering pace. I really don't think he would leave. Hughes like pulis is always very complimentary of the Coates family and there support. Hughes has always stated he owes them a big debt for ignoring his time at qpr. Imo hughes wouldn't leave.

So - have I got this right ?
An eight page thread resultant from the driveling attention seeking opinions of Richard Keys ?
(disgraced TV Football pundit and semi literate journo)
Banished to some fucking sand dunes somewhere in the middle of fucking who knows where
Quite frankly - I've got yoghurts in my fridge, nearing their expiry Dates, I'm more concerned about and,
would give more thought and credence to
FFS fellas !
