We;ve all got our our preferred line up but I'd say if all fit, Hughes' back 5 would be as follows.
Butland Johnson Shawcross Wollscheid Pieters.
Out of 35 games played,he's only been able to pick that back 5 on 13 occasions.
HOME
1-0 Chelsea 2-0 Man C 1-2 C Palace 2-0 Man U 3-1 Norwich 0-0 Arsenal
AWAY
0-0 Newcastle 1-0 Southampton 0-2 Sunderland (Shawcross sent off with score at 0-0) 0-0 West Ham 4-3 Everton 1-2 WBA (Cameron sent off with score at 1-1) 0-3 Leicester (Shawcross injured and subbed with score at 0-0)
PL W D L F A W D L F A PTS 13 4 2 0 9 3 2 2 3 6 10 22
Interestingly,7 clean sheets in the 13 games and a big 22 points haul. Also all of the 3 defeats had possible excuses/reasons. We all know how important a settled back 4/5 is,so just thought I'd show how good we actually can be with a settled defence.

I get it now Probably should've done them in two lines for home and away.

I did leave a gap between the home and away figures before posting.

Nice work but if I had to disagree with anything it would be your assertion as to what our preferred back line would be. Had everyone started the season fully fit, I'm absolutely convinced that our first choice back line would have been Butland, Johnson, Shawcross, Muniesa, Pieters. Sadly, I don't think we've seen that back line even once this season have we?

So, if we get a settled back four and keep that massive German Wiener in the side, we'll stroll on to the Champions League?
Cool.

We've actually been able to put out the same back four in consecutive weeks more this season than last season...but last season conceded fewer goals...

Very nice analysis. The stats also show the other half of the equation, namely the GD, which was + 2 (15-13). One goal a game scored is not enough if we are push on to the "next level".

It was more of an opinion what Hughes' defence would be now, rather than before the season started. You're right that your alternative back line hasn't played together this season.

We've actually been able to put out the same back four in consecutive weeks more this season than last season...but last season conceded fewer goals... That would depend on what the back 4 was though?

Guessing Shawcross played a lot more? Yep - only really missing from Jan last season. And Fonzy, he wasn't the best defensively but he's better than what has replaced defensively. He also won a feck load of headers in there too.

That would depend on what the back 4 was though? The back four we've put out most consistently this season is the one you've highlighted in the OP. Last season we were never able to play the same back four in consecutive weeks more than five games in a row, so you can barely judge based on that many really.

Forget about the back 5. If we had played our best front 4 .... Oh wait that takes more work than I can muster right now.

Interesting stat but just because of a couple of injuries we shouldn't become like a tap with a constant drip!!. We should be able to go back to basics and stay solid/ridged or manage the game in question eg Swansea at home
