Some splits in opinion here on Nu metal
I think a lot of it hasn't aged well but it reflected the millennium times well and it came at a time when metal was a little stale. Typical music industry in that they championed it at first and in recent years turned on it with a vengeance.
what it certainly did is it forced the more traditional acts to up their game considerably. Also people are more accepting perhaps of the dungeons & dragons clichés of trad metal today than perhaps 15 years ago thanks to all the LOTR/Troy/Game Of Thrones fantasy that's become so popular again.
Remember Limp Bizkit??, away from Durst's antics, musically they are better accomplished than many credit them for. Very strong rhythm guitarist and the bass player is shit hot too
This for me though was by far their best & heaviest track, waaay less tongue in cheek and the riff is immense!!!

And if Nu Metal isn't your thing...
This is the perfect antidote - insane lead guitar!

We used to take the piss out of Suicidal Tendencies at college. We used to call them the Winger of thrash metal, but I've always thought this was a great song. Lights, Camera, Revolution is a top quality album and I'm sure they opened up Clash of The Titans tour were miles better than Slayer and Testament Great album. Every track was superb.

Loving a bit of Volbeat at the moment - very catchy stuff that gets in your head: Best thing about this thread is I've now discovered how good this band are. I bought three of their albums last night and can't stop listening to them.

Liked this one off it, especially the gang vocals at the end; could well imagine 10000 singing this aloud!
Seeing as we're doing some crossover thrash, think some Biohazard is in order
Some Hatebreed
Some Cro Mags (great video this, not official, a fan job and some disturbing stuff)
And some Crumbsuckers
And to finish some Exploited (prob my favs at this stuff)

Seems like we've had no industrial yet, apart from Rob Zombie
This one is the stuff of nightmares
Plus can always find room for some Killing Joke

And if Nu Metal isn't your thing... This is the perfect antidote - insane lead guitar! Never liked Nu Metal. Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, all that nonsense. I used to think it was metal marketed towards kids. Like I imagine every 13 year old listened to that stuff, whereas when they got older, they wouldn't be seen dead listening to it. Lol Dragonfarce. Never been a fan. They take all of the mainstream recording techniques, y'know the "how to make a pop star" software and make very plastic pop metal songs. The guitarists are both terrible in reality. They were pretty popular if I remember rightly but they've died a death haven't they. Now this guy really could play. Jason Becker. He unfortunately developed Lou Gehrigs disease before he ever truly reached his peak. Still the music he put out was incredible.

Does that "Lightning Bolt" stuff you scared me to death with belongs in here mate? Not sure Lightning Bolt are very metal. Here's a S-o-T Grindcore jab in the ear for you. My mates, Krupskaya, they love them in Russia and the Baltics. Their first album, on release was heavily bootlegged in the Ukraine, apparently. {I 'played' on it.} Krupskaya. I love the short catchy ones. What are you playing on the album - keyboards/synth is your thing isn't it? Or did you hire a pneumatic drill for the day.
Mrs Lenin indeed.

Mostly broken analogue equipment: tape decks, dansettes etc {can't reveal all me secrets}, close mic'ed and manipulated to form a dissonant soundscape. {With a few samples of Jung discussing 'paranoia' chucked in.} A very bad Eno with a barbed wire boa. Unfortunately didn't/havn't toured with them {yet}.

A couple of steps up from a Dave Davies style attack on the speakers with razor blades and sellotape. I caught up with Black Merda. You got me again - another band I knew nothing about at the time! A decent listen and worth further investigation. Crap result today. I'm cracking the homebrew.

Good views on Numetal; think it was also dubbed mallcore or something like that??
Some bands have evolved eg Papa Roach who now have a sound best described as Alternative Rock meets Motley Crue
Others stayed still and paid the price
Its quite reminiscent of the late 80s early 90s funk metal thing that was insanely popular but disappeared almost overnight
On Dragonforce, I agree there is a cheese factor and there is a very pro tools polished approach; I think they openly admit to being very influenced by video games, you certainly hear it in there solos.
I think they peaked around 2006-2008 and have never quite regained ground since; there are better power metal bands around like Kamelot, Threshold, Stratovarius & Sonata Artica
Try a bit of Kamelot and Threshold

Could use some Black Metal here
These are kind of poster boys for the scene but they still knock some good stuff out. They may not be tr00 or kvlt or real church burners but who cares

Seems like we've had no industrial yet, Plus can always find room for some Killing Joke The Metal side of things doesn't float me boat, but a bit of Industrial is moving towards my general direction. Keep up the good work Trent, but for suckering me into listening to Dragonforce and Kamelot , have this: Skinny Puppy. Early exponents of the darker side of industrial. 1986. Ever so slightly nuts.

Never been a huge fan of really heavy shit, but Children of Bodom are one band I actually do like. Great riffs, great guitarists, shit singing (not that you can understand any of it), but I quite like a lot of their stuff, they seem surprisingly consistent.

Rarely display the Devil Horns... When I do it has to be very fast or very slow, but always very loud. Brutal Truth. Ex members of Anthrax and Nuclear Assault. Brilliant first album. Quite angry chaps. High on Fire. The loudest gig I've endured, ever. Thought me chest'd cave in and me ears would cease to hear. Mistress. Me favourite Brummie brutalists. Disturbing live. Anaal Nakrath. More filthy detritus. They're not too keen on the human condition. Like a bit of Nile, Maudlin of the Well and Hellhammer too. Don't mind Pig Destroyer and Mastadon either. Dillinger Escape Plan and Cult of Luna are worth a blast too.

I tried Skinny Puppy waay back in the day, I bought this album but couldn't get into it; I was all Ministry then LOL so perhaps I could try it again
Reckon youll like these then
Monster track, love the album Tactical Neural Implant
Youll love these..
A bit of COC
Or the remix (which is waaay better)
Cant beat a bit of KMFDM
Or this KMFDM spin off
A bit of Consolidated
Some Dalek
Some Malhavoc (very Burzum like the first one)
And of course, probably the greatest of them all
(Best bassline ive ever heard)
Think we've moved a fair way from ACDC and Maiden LOL. Metal is like an octopus; tentacles in every genre
Just wish there was some Bomb Everything and Skrew more available on Youtube; 1989-1992 the golden age of Industrial Metal

Mentioned Burzum; not often you can play music by a convicted murderer (no wannabe like 50 cent)
Love this guy's music, even if he is a nutjob (kind of a prototype Anders Brevik) Proper Norse pagan shit..
He made some interesting music while inside for 'self defence' - they wouldn't let him have guitars; this is quite beautiful and amazing considering it was done from behind bars

A real fav of mine, got me into Classical music as well; definitely one of Metallica's best
Or the album itself

Heck Trent some sinewy stuff to chew on there mucka. There's a broad spectrum of sounds and styles I appreciate, owt from John Cage's '4m5s' {or whatever it's called}, through to Simon and Garfunkel 'the sound of silence' and all points in between. I was into the early 'industrial' Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, DAF, Einstriende Nuabaten, Test Dept, Fad Gadget, early Human League etc. In 86ish a mate listened to nothing but Skinny Puppy, it always perplexed me that he wouldn't listen to/buy any other bands. I always thought such dedication warranted me giving them a proper listen, but other than the 'Assimilate' track they never really grabbed me. Similarly a mate bombarded me with KMDF, Die Krupps, Consolidated, NegativLand, Rapeman, Fugazi, Bongwater, NiN, and all that horrible stuff. Some interesting stuff amongst it and one particular tape kick started my continuing appreciation for Albini's work, particularly Shellac.
I lost interest in the teutonic beats and fatalism by the time Ministry came along, it was always music I prefer to witness live, rather than home listening. For me a lot of music sounds like structured dancefloor tracks, a bit cliched, not really up my musical strasse. {I will pick through the Controlled Bleeding and Malhavoc because I've never heard them. Cheeers.}
I'll give Burzum another listen, a bit like Voivod, for me the possess all the elements of the stuff that appeals to me, but they didn't/don't.
Nice to see Dalek. Big fan, seen them thrice, I had the opportunity to put them on in Stoke {Talbot} around 03, but it was almost a grand to host it. I dithered over the dates, {would have to have been a weekday} and the dosh. But I saw them anyway, risk free. Intense.
I went through a phaze of buying Terrorizer mag, the free cds were a great broad sweep of all styles of new 'metal'. Discovered and went to see some great outfits heard on them. Koresh was one such band, recorded one of my favourite recent albums, there's nowt much on youtube unfortunately but worth tracking down if you like a grind/matal/atmospheric/electronic/industrial/angry journey.
I came to the realisation last night that I'm far more metal than I thought. This thread has sent me rummaging in the filing cabinet of me music mind. A particular drawer that I'd neglected for a time.
You've mentioned Killing Joke. I still havn't caught up with more recent stuff {I will} their first two albums are cracking and have lasted with credibility. Always liked the idea of Jazz Coleman fronting Meshuggah. In my ears at least they take the KJ chugging template, twist it and turn it to 11.
Meshuggah {not football related.}

Ah yes Meshuggah; not made up my mind on the djent thing
Yeah, you really need to check up on the KJ
Found all these on Youtube, all post 1990 - sadly the last three albums aren't on there
If you like Meshuggah, try these - think they've got 3 bass players and no guitarist

The thread is sinking a bit..Needs a band a day to keep it afloat
Here's today's
The rather good Entombed; Swedish death metal with hint of Motorhead and Discharge -sometimes dubbed Death N Roll
The Fix Is In is prob my fav song; Satanic but slightly tongue in cheek - love it
And a Black Sabbath & Motorhead cover from them

Before delving into the Stoner Rock angle of all things meckle with Kyuss and Electric Wizard, oh and Orange Goblin and Dead Meadow etc. A gentleman should cleanse the palate with Monster Magnet. Driving the tractor on a drug farm. As if.
