This is incredible, Hopkins isn't singing, he isn't playing, he is merely a lightning rod, allowing the rest of us, an opportunity to travel to a place where we normally wouldn't get a chance to go ...

I'm often a bit down on orchestral arrangements of pop songs, I find them a bit unnecessary and self indulgent a lot of the time. But this is excellent, perhaps because Whiter Shade of Pale is based around a Bach piece, I don't know. Anyway, it's tremendous stuff and it would no doubt have been great to have been there. Rest in peace, Mr Brooker, and thanks for one of the iconic songs of the 20th century.
How fantastic is that?
Shame the stage resembles something from Toy Town but yep, jeez, the performance is electric, almost like the song itself is taking over the musicians performing it ...

Now I like Def Leppard I've got a couple of early albums on vinyl somewhere but this just doesn't work.

Apparently written for Billy Idol who turned it down Edit from wiki. Schiff and Forsey were Simple Minds fans and wrote the song with the band in mind. After Forsey played a demo for the band's label, A&M Records, A&M invited him to meet the band backstage after one of their "Tour du Monde" shows in the U.S. However, A&M did not notify Simple Minds that Forsey was coming, and the band declined to record the song.[6] Forsey offered "Don't You (Forget About Me)" to Bryan Ferry, who declined as he was working on his album Boys and Girls. Ferry said later: "It was just bad timing ... Keith Forsey sent me a demo of the song and it sounded like a hit to me. Simple Minds did a great version of it."[7] Billy Idol, whom Forsey was producing at the time, also declined.[6] A&M suggested Corey Hart, who had a hit at the time with "Sunglasses at Night", but Forsey did not think Hart was the right singer.[8] Cy Curnin, the lead singer of the Fixx, also declined.[citation needed]
According to the Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr, Simple Minds were reluctant to record the song as they felt they should only record their own material. They also were frustrated that their attempts to find success in the US market had not found significant radio airplay, and did not see how recording the song would change this.[6]
The band relented after persuasion from A&M and from Chrissie Hynde, Kerr's wife at the time, and after receiving a phone call from Forsey in which he reiterated his admiration for the band.[9] According to one account, the band "rearranged and recorded 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' in three hours in the north London studio and promptly forgot about it,"[10] believing that it would be a throwaway song on the soundtrack to a forgettable movie.[6]
In the process of recording, Simple Minds added parts such as Kerr's "la la la" vocal fills. They resumed work on Once Upon a Time, their next album. However, some of the band members had realised they had recorded something with commercial potential.[6]

Indeed, this thread sends me on many a musikal rabbit hole, firks out some memory holes etc... as hinted, almost got to host a Charlie Parr show at The Talbot, Stoke many moons ago. Shame it didn't work out, he did send me a demo of the 'Crims & Sinners' CD and stuff though. Love John Mayall, around the same time as above, I was lucky enough to swoop on a couple of boxes of Brit bluesbreakers: Mayall, Groundhogs, Ten Years After etc, and the original Blues Artists whom had inspired that rising: Robert Johnson, Arthur Crudup, Big Bill Broonzy, Son House, Bukka White, Rev. Gary, Fred and Annie McD and Country Blues, Yazoo and Newport Folk comps, on vinyl in a Tunstall Charity shop.... some of the vinyl has a biro dedication to 'Flappermouth', {I muse it was the fine collection of an old gob iron Blues dude {from Tunstall'}}. Amongst the treasures were a Rolling Stones and a Hendrix early blues cuts... I'd been made aware of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, Sonny Boy W etc. via a mates's compilation tapes mid '80's.. so I'd been on a blues trek for some time.. Funny how the algorythm has been hitting my timeline with bits of Charlie, this is a great insight into the heart, soul, and art of the dude...

Very much of a time.. I was flicking through a leatherette 7" box of Who re issue picture discs, Purple Hearts, Chords, Merton Parkhas etc, a mate had a clear out, he was a 'Jimmy' inspired Scooter Boy, me not so much though I enjoyed the Jam/Undertones efforts by The Chords.. That late '70's melting pot threw up all sorts of scenes, sub scenes and such.. the fracturing of musikal tribalism perhaps? Have you heard of Cafe Royal Books? A series of photo journals, documenting social history, music scenes and such... I watched this whole episode of Eggs TV so you don't have to.. skip to 24.35 for proprietor Craig Atkinson. Looks great, but a little rich..

Muddy
A particular fave, Sleepy John Estes, narcoplectic or worked so hard the only time he got to get 40 winks was on stage, often in a guitar duo, a buddy to carry the tune and give him the occasional nudge..
Sonny Boy..
