Finishing 2nd in the Championship with a squad that a lot of experts (including our own) predicted would be relegated or battling relegation has to be up there tbh.

It was my second ever game, and the first I went to with my Dad. Hazy memories of Billy Bremner taking a quick free kick when nobody was ready and the goal standing, and a lad being led past the Boothen Stand complete with brown DMs, Oxford bags, scarf tied to his wrist, long wavy hair and a dart still in the bridge of his nose with blood trickling down his face.
Strange what stays in your mind when you're a kid!

The old League Div 1 = Beating Leeds 3-2.
FA Cup = Beating Bolton 5-0 in the S/F.
League Cup = 1972.
Premier League = beating Liverpool 6-1 last season.

Mama's wonder header at Burnley.
Probably the best pass in the history of the game.

Am I the only one that thought the cup final was a much better day than the semi final?
Or are the posts saying Semi-Final measured in a different way? Best performance I'd agree but finest moments I would say is just being in that First Ever FA Cup Final.

I was there, right behind the goal on the boothen end when Dennis headed in the winner - just the best feeling because Leeds fans in those days were even more arrogant than Manure fans of today,

For the OP, I thought long about which was "better" getting to the first FAC final or winning the semi. When you think about it logically, the final was the greater occasion but our best performance was getting there in the semi. Once we were in the final the performance was second rate, are not "our finest hour" in terms of performance. The 6-1 defeat of Liverpool was brilliant and I still keep playing the highlights (poor old sod!). But beating Leeds when they were considered "unbeatable" and were playing teams off the park, doing party tricks for the last quarter of games (if some people can remember) was certainly one of Stoke's greatest performances. We went behind, they thought they had won again, then Stoke slowly took them apart and destroyed their season. They were a dirty, dirty side and rubbing their noses in it was true justice.

After we broke our transfer record twice? We'd finished just outside the play-offs the season before and there was no relegation talk, so don't make it out as some sort of Leicester-esque miracle. Lou Macari getting a team that was skint and struggling into the play-offs for the Premier League by hustling Norwich into giving us Mike Sheron was more of an achievement. With a bit of investment rather than selling Pesch I'm convinced he'd have taken us up but unfortunately he had the skint version of Peter Coates to work under.

Yes the performance was great but as an overall 'Finest Hour' I have to say our first FA Cup Final appearance will win it for me, I have always maintained the Final was a better day even when we lost without putting up quite enough of a fight about it on the day. The semi was pure bliss, but the final was another level. Final - Finest Hour. Semi - Finest Performance. I didn't see the Leeds game as I wasn't even born at that time but the way I have heard about it spoken many times it was something special. I don remember us beating Bristol City at home in the 07-08 promotion season also and while not massively significant in the grand scheme it was the exact moment I realised we were actually on our way to going up. P.S I also still watch highlights of the 6-1 v Liverpool, 5-0 Semi and many other memorable games if there is footage, still feel the same pride now as I did each of those days when I watch it back.

The season after we had finished a cock hair short of the play-offs and we again strengthened our squad with record breaking signings and expensive loans, people were tipping us for relegation? Really? Who were these people? I do remember St Peter telling us that play-offs were a minimum he would accept. Our finest hour has to be winning the first and only major trophy in our history doesn't it?

Finest hour? Has to be a lump in your throat moment then.
Abide with me at the FA Cup final? Shame it was that mad lady off xfactor from Essex leading the chorus!
Or how about running out in the UEFA Cup at the old Victoria Ground to lock horns with the then all conquering Ajax of Amsterdam. It's this for me, we really had made it!!

Keeping us up with relative ease that first season was a much better achievement than promotion or any of the cups. That first season the Premier League was strong, we’d just had both finalists of the Champions League and in the end we finished closer to European qualification than relegation.
Regardless of the tiresome ongoing Pulis debate that remains an excellent effort and the finest achievement of that era by a mile in my eyes.

I was there. The mental when the winner hit the net was incredible.
I ended up miles away from where I was standing. I had to 'swim' back up the terraces to my mates.
Everybody hated those dirty arrogant Leeds cunts back then.

Anytime we beat The Shite is always well up in my memorable moments. The FA Cup final was a lump in the throat - mainly because I still feel the pain from those semi finals / replays against the Arse.....

With the players we had to stay up so comfortably was a truly magnificent achievement. After the signings of Ethers and Beattie we were absolutely brilliant at home. That and the red hot atmosphere make it one of our finest ever times IMO.
