In his last test match - hits the fastest Test match hundred in history - 54 balls.
Somebody has been smiling on him - lots of luck. Stunning catch in the slips off a no ball. Countless edges over the slips that caused the Aussies to post two fly slips.
The afternoon session of the second test has been like a 20-20. Cory Anderson on 37 off 27 balls currently too.
Just don't retire Brendon. What you've brought to Test cricket will be missed. Respect for the traditions of the game.

I was going to post on that thread but thought it deserved a thread on it's own (oh ok, it's too late to go digging out that other thread!). It does feel like we're watching a 20-20. Said I'd go to bed when McCullum got out...

Brilliant stuff!
Beats Viv Richard's ton against us back in 86.
It's a safe bet though that this new record won't last 30 years!

Brilliant stuff from McCullum, one of my all-time favourite players. The series we had with New Zealand last year, both Tests & limited overs, were a joy to watch. Just to go slightly off-topic... What the fuck is Chanderpaul doing on that list?!

Worth a quick watch that innings of Chanderpaul; He was obviously in good nick that day, but his speed of scoring was helped by the Aussies having aggressive fields as they, otherwise, were giving the Windies a bit of a doing. Lots of spaces to score boundaries - which he did with great style. I've not seen McCullum's knock yet, but I imagine it started with a similar Aussie field with plentry of close catchers but they must have dispersed fairly quickly as the assault was launched?

Good watch that not seen McCullum's knock either was at Perth for Gilchrist's and that was just brutal particularly to Hoggy and Monty.
Fair play to England though someone obviously got word out to them as Hoggard bowled a few leg side to fuck his chances of getting the quickest 100.
I also remember Gilly making some unbecoming gestures and comments to the england crowd as they celebrated the ashes win, karma was pretty swift as two days later he was sat in economy with his family and 100 or so England fans on the flight to Melbourne for the boxing day test and Shaun Udal who only flew out as injury cover for England was in business class

Just McCullum's knock - the way he batted with Anderson brought back memories of Botham and Dilley laying into an Aussie attack.
Great cricket.

It's always been a regret that I didn't get to watch that Headingly test at the time. Was on holiday in France as a kid. I use to wait at the camp site shop each afternoon waiting for the English papers to arrive to find out the score. I can still remember reading the paper walking back to the tent eager to relay what had happened to my Dad.

I missed out on the OT test due to summer hols but I do have a memory of driving across Belgium listening to a frustratingly inconsistent reception of TMS describing Botham's assault on Lillee and co. What I heard was great though. TMS - the sound of summer.

Sadly I haven't been able to see what must have been a wonderful innings ......it's a sad day for the game that he is retiring at an age when he's so much more to offer ...I wonder how much the Chris Cairns case has had on his decision to retire ....Cairns was pretty scathing about him ...I'm not sure why McCullum would be less than honest in a case like this ? I prefer to believe in McCallums integrity in this case .

Who has been banned from watching England bat or even entering the room when we're watching - based on his ability to come in, watch 30 seconds of cricket, and break the best partnerships pretty much every time.

Actually thinking about it I do tend to have this ability as well. I bet Brendan was thinking 'that bastard Cooper has just tuned in on Sky-I might as well throw my wicket away now.'

I think with Mccullum it's more the constant touring and strain of playing all three formats that has led him to retire, he also then is still young enough to pick up some retirement cash playing 20\20 and perhaps even a bit of county cricket as despite his IPL contract NZ cricketers aren't that well paid. What says it all about him is that the only reason this was made public beforehand was the 20\20 world cup squad having to be named otherwise he'd have said nothing until it was all done and dusted.
