Affelay is decent, but very rarely plays a truely penetrating pass. The only one I can think of was to Arnie for the penalty at Everton, and that still leftArnie with Stones to bear. For me, he is tidy and competent but I am not sure that he is qquite as good as we would like to think. Perhaps he will dictate at Liverpool on Tuesday.

Only one driving forward in the midfield again, looking up, creating. Great team player.

He is neat & tidy, but not really offering an awful lot else. I was a big fan of N'Zonzi but he got quite a lot of stick for playing safe passes, yet Afellay is similar in that regard but it doesn't seem to get mentioned. He needs to have more of an influence, take a few risks etc. Personally I think we need better central midfielders if we are going to push on.

I agree with thehoof - he is more neat and tidy than threatening - and that's especially noticable when the rest of the team isn't playing well.
We tend to forget though that he's still finding his feet in the side. N'Zonzi, for example, only started bringing the ball forward with confidence in his final year with us - before that he tended to just shift the ball sideways and sit in. Hopefully Affelay will also blossom when he feels more an integral part of the team.

I think that we should have more threads about Affellay.

Thank you xch; at least someone can find a positive. Too many quickly forget how proud we have been this season with lot of our matches. Let's be optimistic, it should be a piece of cake on Tuesday to score against Liverpool! then today will be forgotten.

Totally wasted playing DM, he needs to be playing further forward, no coincidence our best performances came with Affelay feeding Bojan Arnie and Shaq. The sooner Cameron is back to play alongside Whelan (Glen that is not the Glenda who turned up today) and we have that front 4 the better. Bad bad day today, but it has been coming.

I think people are going slightly overboard about Affelay. What does he do that is particularly great? He does the simple things well (like Whelan) but he always passes sidewards or backwards and never does a penetrative pass forward. I just think he's doing a decent job in midfield but not spectacular.

Need to go back to basics, none of this fancy pants fluidity up front, we need 2 wingers, a number 9 and a number 10 and they all need to be told what's expected of them

He plays too deep, playing him in the wrong position it's criminal.

He plays too deep, playing him in the wrong position it's criminal. I disagree. The boy Homzey nailed it in a Tweet a few weeks back stating that we're playing with a defence and attack with no midfield. Affellay is there to link the two together but I think he needs help from the attacking central midfielder which in recent games he's not been getting from Bojan. We need more of the attacking players taking responsibility to take the ball forward. Affellay is really brave in deep positions with good attacking intent. I thought it was a ridiculous signing thinking he was going to be a back-up wide forward and then when he got sent off I was pretty much ready to write him off but he's been the consistent shinning light since WBA away to now.

Deserves alot of praise today
To be able to do that is brilliant
But with ten players that bad surrounding him, makes it even harder to play that well

Affelay played well today and yes he was playing deep at times whilst breaking up attacks. A point above is that he does not make effectively defence splitting passes which I may concede but today there was not much running off the ball or when there was it was impossible ball to play! His confidence on the ball is heartening and a great asset to the team. His distribution and ability to find players in space is quite superb. He has come on so much since the early season.
I thought also Whelan and Wolly did well today!

We would shine so much more with a defensive midfielder like N'zonzi there. Giving more room for Afellay to work the offence and also he's there as back-up. Wasting his talents in that deeper role.

I was impressed again today. Constantly made space and some perfectly weighted passes out to the wings, but we couldn't make anything from thrm. Summarised by Pieters aiming at the space station when he tried to take one of those first time.

Afellay is a bit of a problem at the minute imo. He's a bloody lovely footballer and deserves to be playing. However not as a holding centre mid. With bojan out of form I'd play him as the attacking mid just off a striker as his dribbling and intricate play is sublime. He simply isn't strong enough to play alongside whelan

He had no one in front of him to pass to today anyway. Spot on. The last few games we've been so static. Affelay had no one to pass too cos no one moved for him. Only Walters made one or two runs and he fluffed his lines.

Can't believe some people see Afellay as a problem, he's one of our most naturally talented players ffs and everything goes through him. The same bullshit was thrown at Nzonzi until he left and suddenly everyone was his biggest fan.
