I've finally seen the light, and got my head around using KODI on PC and Android. I've got a smart TV that I can cast my Android phone/tablet screen to, and it works OK. Is there any real advantage of buying a box, compared to casting from my phone?

I would think...
- ease of use - a box is there and physically connected
- navigation on your TV rather than your phone using a dedicated remote
- your phone may not be able to handle playing videos of higher resolution
- you may want to consider ripping your DVD's (I use makemkv) and music to give a media library - stored on an external HDD or NAS. Much easier to have a box connected than a phone

The box or TV dongle is the way to go, along with a wireless mouse.

The box or TV dongle is the way to go, along with a wireless mouse. I'd agree. But I'd recommend against going for one of those generic nameless boxes from ebay/Amazon. Make sure the manufacturer supports the box and releases new firmware. I've seen a number of problems resolved by new firmware on my Minix.
