Its amazing how things have turned around in a short space of time. Just wonder given the current struggles of some big teams if we can look for a top 6 finish and Europa League football?
Man United/ Man City/ Arsenal / Tottenham
4 much better resourced teams well above us in the league so that puts them always well out of reach
Leicester/ Everton / Liverpool / Southampton / Palace
We can afford one of these teams to finish above us but we need to catch the remaining 4 teams to get there. Assuming we can overhaul Saints, Palace and Everton (difficult) we probably need Leicester to implode because I can only see Liverpool improving under Klopp
Chelsea
Of course the elephant in the room. 5 points behind us but it seems they are turning the corner. We need to finish above them to have a chance of top 6 but its going to be hard going.
Conclusion
Top 6 is do-able but it needs Leicester to drop or Liverpool/Everton to remain inconsistent and Chelsea not going on a big winning streak.
I know its too early to stay but after the first 6-8 games of the season the best we were looking at is mid-table but things are looking up again for me now.

No it isn't on. You play the games as well as you can and win and get all the points you can but top six isn't a realistic aspiration.

I wouldnt say we are definitely going to manage it at all but given our history under Hughes of being stronger in 2nd half of season I reckon we have an outside chance. Care to make a bet with me Joe?

Saturday will give us a clue as to whether we are Europa material.
On paper, easier than Southampton - but only on paper...

Until we lose again then we're getting relegated, then getting relegated from the Championship, Hughes will set the Brit on fire, Coatesy will sell us to Norman Smurthwaite and then we'll go out of business not once, but 62 times.
And it'll all be Philipp Wollscheid's fault.

Saturday will give us a clue as to whether we are Europa material. On paper, easier than Southampton - but only on paper... These are the games where we tend to come un-stuck, we always seem to get on a good run picking up points where we least expect them then totally arse it up when we expect to do well

Top 8 maybe but not top 6, we can't finish above both manchester clubs, liverpool, arsenal, spurs, Chelsea will come good, so that's a guarantee 6 teams above us, plus we have Southampton, Palace, Everton, Leicester and Swansea will come good again.

can someone allude to signs of Chelsea's recovery for me?
They beat a terribly inconsistent Norwich side..... is there something else that I've missed?

How refreshing is all this instead of the 40 points and expectation bollocks we became used too Totally agree, but I think we were brain washed. I still keep calculating how to get to the magic 40. I would not be surprised if we get upper 50-60 this season but will be pleased when we reach 40. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I'm not sure I'm sold on top 6, but 7th and a best of the rest finish and Europa spot depending on who wins the Cup (ideally us ) is well within the bounds of possibility. As cheekymatt described well above, barring miracles the 2 Manc clubs, Liverpool, Arse and Spurs are simply on a higher level. That leaves 6th seemingly up for grabs but while I'm loving Chelsea being shit and us being above them, and I hope it stays that way as long as possible, it'll still be a huge challenge for us to finish above them. Chelsea scored 2.29 points per game on average last season, if they wake up and return to that average for the remainder of the season they'd still come out with 71 points. If they're still shit come say feb we can start to hope, but til then I think it's safest to assume they're still also on that higher level. That leaves a straight fight between us, Soton, Everton, Palace, West Ham and Leicester for 7th. Saints and Everton both look very good at the moment and we've still got a bit to prove to show we're on the same level (though we did quite a bit of that proving on Saturday). I definitely feel we're better than Sham and Palace if we play to our potential, as well as Leicester though of course I have great respect for what they've achieved so far. On our day we can beat any of them and if all our players click I believe we can do it, but being realistic at this precise moment I'd probably put us 4th favourite for 7th behind Everton, Saints and Leicester. Nothing wrong with a bit of optimism and belief, though!

I see no reason why not, I really don't. Our attacking trio is up there with the best in the league (no, really, it is) and our defence is looking as solid as it ever has done. No team is unbeatable this season and I'd back us against anybody on our day. We now have the players that should enable us to be 'on our day' more often than not.
If you don't aim for the sky, you end up in the river. I have faith in Hughes and I'm pretty sure he didn't sign Shaqiri and Bojan to settle for another mid-table stroll.
Top 7 is achievable and realistic; however I think everybody would take a cup win/final and comfortable league finish if not. We are bloody good, I just wish some would show a bit more faith instead of poo-pooing the idea that we could finish in the top 6 or 7. That's not to say I'd be disappointed if we didn't, I'd be fine with top 10 but we definitely have it in us to finish in the upper echelons of the league.

The cautious optimist in me says that we will have a few blips between now and the end of season. But in between we'll be very good and again beat the record set in the previous season and grab 8th spot. Also, I can see us reaching the final of the League Cup and winning.
