Theres a thread about Whelan that got me wondering is he our best value for money signing ever? After 8 years loyal service he's got to be up there. 500k = roughly 60k a season he's cost us in outlay.
Probably not the best value of all tine though. I only remember the last 25 years but there are other contenders we signed in that promotion season along with Glen, most notably Ryan. Others for free. Season before that we signed Fuller for the same as we paid for Glen.
Oh and I forgot Bojan. Also who dud we waste the most money on? Bangoura, Paul Stewart (rumoured 14k a week wages that season) and Palacios immediately spring to my mind.

Sonko and his brown paper bags of cash must be up there for one of the worst.
Agree regarding Shawcross, Bojan. I'd throw in Hoekstra who was worth the entrance fee alone!

For longevity in the side coupled with value for money, you'd be hard pressed to match Glenn other than with the likes of local lads who came through like Smithy, Bluto, Dodd, Skeels etc.
Of more recent vintage, Fuller was hugely VFM too (500k too?), as was Sorensen (free?).
Waste of money - Gerry McMahon, Sammy Bangoura, Andrew Davies, Michael Tonge, Ibrahima Sonko, Dave Kitson, Brek Shea, it's a long list - but none touch Wilson Palacios.

As I always say, or write, on topics like this, the best transfer anybody in England ever made was Stanley Matthews 53 or 54 years ago. The club was at a low point and perceptibly declining, small crowds and no prospects. Within a couple of years we were back at the top level.
Second best ever has to be John Ritchie, a year or so later.
Third best, probably Greenhoff.

Signing Jack Butland was extremely astute. He'll probably have the largest net increase in value in any transfer. N'Zonzi was vfm. Three great seasons where he was integral to our transition, and we doubled our money. Whelan and Ryan for their continued contributions. A lot of the recent business has been great: Pieters, Arnie, Diouf, Bojan. Johson looks a steal and I'm sure Afellay will prove to be brilliant for 'free'. Be interesting to see who emerges from the Academy over the next few years.

Honorary mention for Bego? Signed for £3.25m, stayed with us for 5 years, winning player of the year in that time before being sold for £8m.
Maybe not Top 3, but a very good signing nonetheless.

Thinking on I've heard it said Palacios was only signed as part of the Crouch deal. Still a bloody dear do at £18M for the pair but the signings raised our profile as a club massively at the time. People forget Kitson at £5M fell into that category too, our first serious signing in the Prem he was a prospect at the time after a successful spell with Reading at that level

Mike Sheron is an excellent shout. Sold on for £3M as well

Best...Stein Worst...toss up between Palacios and kitson!!! At least Kitson scored the odd goal,Palacios's contribution has been a big fat zero. Probably the worst signing in the history of SCFC......although if we hadn't have taken him we wouldn't have got Crouch, allegedly

We covered the cost of buying Stan back several times over with the increases in the gate receipts that season. Ritchie cost £2,500 - that is about £15 per goal! And Greenhoff was certainly staggeringly good value for £100k. He'd have been even better value if we'd insured the Butler Street Stand at replacement cost.

It depends how you measure 'good value'. We bought Alan Hudson for £240,000 which was a club record and a lot of money then. I was only 12 when we signed him and couldn't believe that somebody that good could play for Stoke. He's still the best Stoke player I've ever seen . Priceless.

Thomas Sorensen was for me a brilliant free transfer signing and was a big part in us staying up in that first season. A superb pro and very likeable guy too.

Best is arguably Mike Sheron.
Signed for £300k + Keith Scott
Sold for £2.7m which funded our financial input in to the Brit.
Let's not forget he almost fired us to promotion as well.
Fuller & Shawcross are right up there as well as Whelan.
No doubt Bojan will go on to prove outstanding value for money too.
Of the worst value for money, Palacios wins hands down. Followed by Peter Shilton & Jani Viander (did he cost £200k?)

Can we say Stanley Mathews was both the worst and the best transfer. We sold the championship, we bought a legend

The second time he kept us up. My dad loved Alan and dragged me down to the Vic for his second debut against Arsenal. He said 'you've got to see this man play' I only wish I'd been old enough to see him first time around.

Best in last 10 years = Got to be Sorro hasn't it? to get a keeper of that quality with the experience he had for free was a masterstroke!
Best ever = Steino, for no other reason than i always wanted to have his babies because he was just a ickle bit spesh!

Jimmy Greenhoff only cost us £100,000. Wow 1969–1976 Stoke City 274 games (76goals) Yes, but that was 1969, don't know how that equates in modern money. It would be Shawcross and Whelan, mainstays of a top ten Premiership side. I would say pretty much every one of that brilliant 70's side was great value for money

Wish I had seen Hudson play because I have no doubt he was one of the very best. But my first experience of him was in MacDonald's in castle in the late 80s where he was sitting in by himself looking like a homeless person (maybe he was), pissed as a fart and he also tried to chat up my mum! Sad but true story my only direct experience of the man.

I don't suppose Coatesy felt he got much return on the £1million he invested 89/90 either. Relatively speaking that was a body blow and he tended towards parsimony after that. As we noticed.

Stan Matthews was the best value for the reasons already given. No one has yet give a mention to Terry Conroy about £10,000 I think, another shout for Ritchie. In more recent times I think all our Prem. league goalkeepers Simonsen ,Sorrenson ,Begovic and Butland have been good value and of course Ryan and Glenn Whelan.

Whelan in the last 30 years. £500.000, instrumental to promotion in first season, everpresent for 8 seasons in a very critical position for the team, hardly ever injured, he even came back after 4 weeks from a leg fracture. 70 odd caps for his country. A brilliant role model in an era of prima donna's. Amazing signing!
