This tour has quickly crept up on us. The first warm up game is now well into its second (and final!) day. A second two day practice game starts Thursday.
First test starts a week today.
The BIG question though is... will the return of a cricket thread to the EE board bring Bish back?

Is it not a rare Scot with an interest in Greekit or is that a foolish stereotype I need to discard? Enjoying your economics on the Healey thread BTW.

Have we decided who's opening with Cook yet? Moeen? Moeen opened in the first warm-up. I suspect he's in the driving seat. Wonder if they'll paly Hales for the second warm up match?

Love the place. If you like beer and football, you'll get on famously up here. Behave like an arse, you may have problems! As to a Scotsman's affection for cricket, most can't be bothered, but those that are interested all display a passion for the English cricket team that is unique in sport up here. As one pal said if England were playing tiddly winks never mind football or rugby he'd support the opposition, but in cricket he cheers them on with a passion. Strange.

There's more registered cricket clubs than rugby clubs which I guess means more people play it. I suspect that the people that play rugby in the winter play cricket in the summer. Playing either of both sports is generally a consequence of going to private schools - from what I've seen leastways. With the exception, of course, of Asian folk who seem to share a universal passion!

Well, back to the cricket... So who's going to open with Cooky? Moeen or Hales. Bairstow or Taylor in the middle order? Will Butler keep his place given his poor batting form? Will they play 4 seamers (Anderson and Broad are a given. Woods and Stokes too)? You'd assume Rashid will finally make his debut (on his third tour ). And if Samit get's to play, will Cook actually bowl him?

And if Samit get's to play, will Cook actually bowl him? Yes indeed - and excellent questions! Moeen will open with Cook. Hales needed a strong ODI series against the Aussies to be in with a chance. He didn't have one so he will have to wait for his opportunity. I hope Taylor gets the middle order spot. Bairstow may have done well at County level but he continues to flatter to deceive in international cricket. Taylor on the other hand has produced some consistent quality with the three lions on his shirt, he deserves a shot. Butler keeps his place - but this is last chance saloon for him. He must look the part as a test bat. Even if he doesn't manage to get big scores. Yes they will play 4 seamers - having Stoke's at 6 and Ali opening allows them to put the three specialist quicks at nine, ten, jack. Rashid will play at 8. Samit is there only as cover for Ali or Rashid.. Well, that's what I reckon. The other interesting factor in the series is Bell. If he has a poor series I reckon he'll be gone.

If Ansari had been fit we would have played as a third spinner with 3 seamers, I'm not convinced they have the same faith in Patel though so I fear a 4 seam attack which is not necessary in those conditions.
I would choose the following.....
Moeen Cook Bell Root Taylor Stokes Patel Buttler Rashid Broad Anderson
It will be......
Moeen Cook Bell Root Bairstow Stokes Buttler Rashid Broad Wood Anderson
Be a real tough series and I fear a 2-0 defeat

Butler would be gone for me. (Well, gone as in I'm happy with Bairstow batting/wicket & Butler doesn't deserve a place on his batting form)
No-one interested in Finn, Wiley, Plunkett? (Are these lot not even on the tour?)

Can't disagree with any of that. Do you really need 4 seamers and only 2 spinners in those conditions? I guess the question is: is a backup spinner like Patel likely to be more dangerous than a third seamer on those wickets? Could Stokes not do the third seamer job - which isn't likely to be that heavy a requirement. On Bell, he really is in the last chance saloon. He really needs a good solid series where he gets lots of runs, not just a couple of 50's. It's a long time since we've seen that from him - was it the 2013 Ashes?

I can't see them playing any other team than the one you list - well not until the third test anyway. I also prefer the first team you've listed. 3 spinners + Root, and 3 seamers. Bats deeper too. Give Buttler a test or two depending on if he get's some form back. We can't keep persisting with him (or anyone) who loses form for a long period. That has to be part of the new aggressive England approach.

He really needs a good solid series where he gets lots of runs, not just a couple of 50's. It's a long time since we've seen that from him - was it the 2013 Ashes? Bell last delivered the consistent batting you'd expect of a stalwart in, as you say, 2013. Since then he just hasn't delivered. You're right we don't need four seamers, but I reckon they have a (legitimate) concern about Stoke's ability to provide the control you'd want from a third seamer in the UAE. He's best used, for now, as a shock bowler; three or four overs of all out attack. Doesn't matter if the runs flow, because he may take a wicket. Add to that it seems all our spin options are about attack, or at least not defence. Ali has the good knack of taking wickets but also concedes runs, Rashid is a leggy; 'nuff said! And Root is a part time offie who can't be expected to provide Swan-like control. So the role of the the third seamer on this tour, I reckon, is largely to do with control. Need a proper bowler to do that. Cricket, as our missing friend Bish would say, is about defence as much as attack. Your side has to be able to do both.

1st day of the 2nd two day warm up match over with Pakistan A closing on 192-9 off 87.5 overs.
Sounds like a very slooooooooowwwwwwww day. Hope it's not an sign of things to come.
Good day for Finn (4-16 off 15 overs) and Rashid (3-25 off 19). That cements Radhid's place (not that there was any doubt), not sure where it leaves Finn, probably still on the sidelines. But maybe not.

Yes it was - I was confused with that because the scorecards show just the nine wickets. Then the same happened on day 2 when England batted and Ali had the ignominy of being out twice in the same innings! Worryingly, both innings scored similar low scores at very slow rates. Less than 200 of neatly 90 overs. Doesn't really ease the pulse rate for a series England seem under cooked for. 4 days of practice (seems wrong to call what they've just played games) for the slow wickets and spin of the UAE and Pakistan surely can't be enough.

Yes didn't seem the most lively of pitches could be a slow day “working” from home Tuesday although with the way home teams help touring sides prepare nowadays the test pitches will probably be completely different.

We seem to have started a trend of rather than playing proper first class games ahead of the Tests, playing a couple of short knock-abouts. We did the same in the Windies. Don't know where this idea has come or if it makes any sense, but I guess when you have 4 tours in this calendar year then there isn't that much time for stuff apart from the proper internationals.
