Excellent as always, Chief. I'm glad someone else noticed how well Adam and Whelan played together. I started a thread yesterday but failed to get any traction. And I agree what's going on with Ireland? I just don't get it. Mind you, there's a few other things about Hughes's selections and subs this season I don't get. Yesterday he seemed to get it all about right, except for bringing on Affelay instead of Ireland.

Excellent write up. Adam's contribution couldn't be surmised any better and he's been under estimated in his efforts. Agree also that Arnie was excellent going forward and had Hutton in his pocket as the most creative on the pitch. Also thought aswell with Johnson solid at RB, Geoff was the best defender on the pitch and on the day when we needed it, he cleared it. Glenn's holding job was excellent, didn't know he only missed two passes... that's amazing...

I don't think you can discount the influence of the little man.
I'm just watching the game for the second time tonight and although he lost the ball more than usual, in that first half he seemed like he was constantly available to take the ball and take us forward. He really is a special talent.
I agree with the Ireland comments, he could have continued where Bojan left off although there was s noticeable improvement in Affellay's performance. It'll be interesting to see how he pans out, I'm still in two minds on him, same with Rip Van. The only way we'll find out is game time.
Fucking roller coaster ride as usual and not surprising given its the most financially rewarding ever.

The ball stuck to him, he got into good positions and he should've had an assist.

Is it possible that Whelan over-bosses our midfield when playing alongside Van Ginkel but when someone with experience are alongside him (Adam this season, Nzonzi last) they don't allow it to happen? Just a thought

I honestly expected Adam to be kept out of the team for a while after his red card ban, but he was brought straight back in. Hughes clearly rates him and sees him as intrinsic to his tactical set up.

Outstanding write up mate. Kudos on the Pulp Fiction reference too. Good stuff Have you ever considered setting up an optional donation link at the bottom of each piece? You've done it for free for a long time now and if people wanted to continue to view on that basis then they could happily do so. I'm sure there's a number of people that would happily give a quid or two for what you produce though. It must take a significant amount of time and effort to write and the quality of the final product is top notch. You must get hundreds of hits at least so it'd only take a small percentage to donate to give you a bit of reward for your effort. I see it as no different to buying a magazine, fanzine or newspaper. You're paying for the content, and yours is consistently brilliant. It's a talent, why shouldn't you earn a few quid from it?

Just a thought What do you mean by over-bosses, Paul? Well with Adam and Nzonzi they play their own game without Whelan having to to take on their responsibilities, is it possible that when they or someone similar in experience are not there he takes on too much which restricts what the inexperienced player(Van Ginkel in this case) can do. The question doesn't have to be about Whelan, but in general is it possible for a Midfielder of any team to over boss his own players?

He's comfortably one of our top three performers of the season so far.

There's no doubt about that Rob, no arguments with Whelans performances at all, top notch so far this season, neither am I questioning his captaincy, I wouldn't give it to any one else. It's just that you hinted in your conclusions that there was an understanding between Adam and Whelan in the Villa game and there certainly was an understanding between Whelan and Nzonzi. Is there understanding between Whelan and Van Ginkel, if not, why? Is it lack of trust? Is Whelan allowing an understanding to develop? This is the first time that Glen as lead us for a large chunk of time (apart from Ryan's lay off last season). I'm probably just looking for reasons why VG hasn't really stamped his authority in a match so far and I'm not looking to lay the blame at Whelans feet for that, I believe VG needs to get involved in a passage of play far earlier than he does at present but for the life of me can't see why he doesn't.

I see what you mean now Paul. Don't know if it's a case of over-bossing but it's certainly possible that Adam's comfort, confidence and experience both within the squad and the league mean he dovetails more easily, absolutely. I also think though that Saturday's game suited him down to the ground. I'd be thoroughly and quite roughly jiggered if another Prem side gives us that much space this season.

I believe Charlie is the answer at present and have every confidence he can perform against anyone. He did a few seasons ago against Man Utd when Nzonzi received a 3 match ban. It's crossed my mind a few times this season the enormous pressure Glen is under, which only proves how well he is playing right now. Not only is he leading the team during what as been a poorish start but he is also being asked to be part of a new midfield partnership. I'm not sure it has helped the teams plight.

Charlie did play well in that Man Utd game but he did have Walters back in the Mama role to do his running for him.
Nzonzi was always going to be a big miss, I think. Still think on balance it's too early to say how the midfield will turn out and 90% of the question hinges on how MVG turns out. Charlie is absolutely worth his place at the moment though.

It's significant that we've now played three games in a row with the same formation and minimal personnel changes, and there are signs of teamwork. Well, well.

Fosters 5 conclusions:
1) We shouldn't play more than 1 new player in midfield at any one time 2) If you look up 'bad omen' in a dictionary there's a photo of MVG 3) We don't miss Ryan as much as some like to make out 4) Arnie and Bojan still need to work on their fitness levels. Likewise someone needs to tell Afellay what a gym is. 5) MH questionable substitutions continue with no like for like Bojan sub (as Rob pointed out)

Great writing again chief. And interesting points being made here about the midfield. Midfield can only operate smoothly with an understanding between the players involved. Whelan and Adam has worked really well in the last two games IMO and Bojan is sharpening up all the time. Also Hughes is still finding significant game time for MVG and Affellay from the bench. Really feels like the squad is coming together.

We made the same mistake last season throwing Bojan and others all in from the start before putting them on the bench for them to get accustomed to the league. Note to Mark Hughes for next season that, whoever the new signings are> Ease them into the team.
