Currently-Wilson. He covers RB, CB, LB, CM.
I may have made this up but didn't Dobing pretty much play everywhere for us at one stage or another?

Brendan O'Callaghan converted from Centre Forward to Centre Half didn't he? Not in an 'he could cover in either position' kind of a way, rather it was a complete renaissance. Just woke up one morning and decided he was a defender and not a goal scorer

Calvin Palmer and Alan Philpotts. Don't remember Dobing as a utility player tbh.

In the past Conroy has played across the front 5 as it was then.
Skeels, I seem to remember, played in just about every outfield position at one time or another.
In modern times Wilson and Cameron would appear to be the most versatile. Wilson performs adequately across all back 4 positions. Cameron covers 3 of the back 4 positions plus defensive midfield - and he could possibly cover the box to box midfield job as well.

It's very handy having that versatility

Geoff could do a job anywhere but in goal.
Note I don't mean he'd do exceptionally well, just that he wouldn't look ridiculously out of place.

I think the word versatile gets bandied around too much in football. Versatile to me means, somebody who has the ability to 'play well' in more than one position. Shotton was never any good anywhere other than right back. He may be a decent centre half, but we never really saw him play there.
Out of the current crop, I'd say Wilson is the most versatile, as I've seen him fill in well at left back, right back, and centre half (although he does frighten me at CB). Personally, I think he's a liability in midfield, so I wouldn't count that as part of his versatility.

Most versatile player I ever saw in the flesh was John Charles who was World Class at both centre forward and centre half (as CBs were called in those days).

It's fair to say I really don't like versatile players.

Eric Skeels was always a versatile player.
Brendon O'Callaghan of course.
Tony Allen Right back & Left Back
Woodgate Centre Back and right Back (remember Wolves away?)
All for now

Whenever I see the phrase versatile player, I just can't help thinking it is basically describing a player that isn't good enough to hold down one position but can be average in numerous ones. Like Wilson, Walters, Cameron delap etc etc

Shame he was made play right wing, left wing, and I'm sure he played a game up front for us. He wasn't a bad right bad though having said that

Bill Asprey. Full Back, Centre Half, Centre Forward. Versatile enough to be our manager too !(though not a great one)!

Versatility was the key to Rinus Michels' total football. It shouldn't be that hard either.
