Premiership clubs have 25 players in any squad worth millions of pounds.
Im amazed that only half of each squad seems to be at playing fitness both regarding stamina and match fitness.
Im aware some play u21s but not many.
Im my time i remember the central league was a competitive league for squad members and reserves .
With the assets of these premiership clubs ie: the players why have they not reinstated a reserve league.
An example would be if Stoke had lost to luton last night then some players would not play a competive match until January and the Fa cup early rounds.
Just seems ridiculous to me.

Seems a bit random. What are you trying to say, youth?
Edit: oh, you hadn't finished typing it !

I expect the team in the next round to be stronger as a few who played last night could leave this next week or in the first week of September when the loan window to the Championship opens.
I think Hughes plans to build up fitness gradually to last a whole season. What this means is we often look undercooked in August.
We should use the three over-age players in the under-21s more often than we do.

Agree with the OP
We now have the ridiculous situation where players are apparently unavailable to the 1st team due to "lack of match fitness", but don't have the opportunity to play matches to get fit.
Used to follow our reserve team a bit back in the day. I don't see why we haven't resurrected it.

I think he has a valid point.
As the reserve league was replaced with the Under 21s to encourage young players, where do squad player keep fit and stay sharp?
They may get an occasional run out in the under 21s but many have no regular competitive football.
Also, it must put a lot of pressure on the youngsters knowing that when they hit 21, that only a few can be kept on and most will have to find alternative employment.

Certainly explains the frustrations re players like Afellay and VG being picked to gain there match fitness if it's the only way they can get games I guess MH has to risk a loss or 2 to get the long term reward.

To be fair when I was their age I was as fit as a butchers dog, worked all day on Doulton's, smoked and got pissed over the weekend and still managed to play two games 1 on the Saturday for Florence and the second on the Sunday for my local. So I don't buy this not fit, too tired bollocks.

I love the 'lets roll out the fitness thing' from managers
A lot of them Luton lads had not played before and they just wanted it more

Well said, Kev. I used to go down to watch the reserves often. When did that all get done away with?

I was lucky enough to play in central league fo Stoke res in the late 60s first team players back from injury and players not in match day squad always playing. But only 1 sub in those days played with and against some top internationals.Very stiff competition in that league and good prep for first team also played on main stadiums

I live in Crewe. Ex Crewe goalie Tommy Lowry died this week. When Stoke were away I used to go to Gresty Road. Lowry Leigh Stott Barnes Gannon was generally the defence. week in week out win draw and generally lose. Never a supporter of Crewe but we were Banks Marsh Smith Bloor and Pejic
The players wore 1-11 and the sub was 12.
Money has changed football of course. They can afford to wear 99 these days and sit on the bench
