John Tudor. Edit: maybe Howard Kendall. Shit, I thought I was on the 'Players Most in Need of a Hairdresser' Thread.

Gordon Banks. Turned down Liverpool for us. Jimmy Greenhoff. Out first £100k signing. I remember that day clearly and it most certainly rocked the city (well Alsager anyway)!

Bojan was a "Rock the city signing" Its fair to say that I am a pretty keen football / Stoke supporter (been going for 40 odd years) albeit not a massive follower of teh game outside of these shores I had never heard of Bojan before and I would wager neither had 95% of the population of Stoke so I beg to differ Great signing but definately not 'rock the city'

Considering the high profile of the clubs he'd played for I think more people would know of him than you think. I certainly consider it a 'rock the city' signing.

That may be true, I must admit I had never heard of Bojan (I'd never heard of Shaqiri either in truth) but I consider myself to be a devoted Stoke City supporter but not a generic 'footy fan' in the round so that would fit with your theory. I suspect even now if you were to do a random poll in the UK of the population as a whole and ask 1)Who knows who Peter Crouch is? and 2)Who knows who Bojan is? then Crouchy would take it by at least 50:1. If you were to do the same with Crouch and Shaqiri it might be more like 1000:1. Crouch is the only player in our side with a national profile which reaches beyond a football audience in this country.

The moment Sir Stan re-signed from blackpool would be up there with the top i would imagine?! I would reckon nothing else comes anywhere near the impact of Stan's return. It was front page news and the talking topic of every work place/meeting place in the area. Banksie signing was a huge step forward in the clubs ambition and a major talking point. The general view was Waddington had done another master stroke. For me the return of Ritchie and the signing of Greenhoff and Hudson were big high-lights as I then knew we would be scoring goals, but they were probably only really appreciated by the fans not the general public. In recent years Crouch and Bojan were big headline events.

European football gets more coverage on TV than its ever done, so easy to turn your TV on now and watch an Italian, Spanish or German game.

I think for a number of reasons the following signings have had various levels of impact, in terms of Rock the City NOT PERFORMANCE, for where we were at the time:
Bojan - As someone says above, this brought a lot of focus from Europe. I was amazed he chose us and I am still grateful. Arnie - Big player profile on the continent and had people talking too. I was chuffed and still am. Crouch - A big player with a big profile for ALL the right reasons. One of my favourite Stoke players in my time, all things considered. Owen - Worldwide football face whom we failed to capitalise on in my opinion. He could have done more whilst with us if he was given more of a chance/role. Hendrie - For where we were at the time he was a big signing and rocked the city and it was right at the start of our ascent. Berger - This signing for whatever reasons didn't live up expectations but the excitement of his capture was quite high. Hoekstra - For where we were I was blown away he signed for us. Ajax's replacement for Bergkamp signed for us! Akinbiyi - For what he did during his loan, to secure his permanent signature gave us all a massive lift. Walters - Signing him on loan was massive at the time for me. The Sentivale even did a poster at the time if I remember.

I've only known two in my lifetime, Hudson and Shilton. Shaqiri would be another. Lots more names mentionend on this thread, but in my time watching Stoke (from the early 70s) the two you mention are the standouts. The comparison with Hudson is a good one in terms of being unlikely. But we got him - or rather Waddo did. If Shakey does sign, I suspect Hughes will be a big factor in persuading him to ply his trade at the BrIt.

I've only known two in my lifetime, Hudson and Shilton. Shaqiri would be another. Hudson was an outstanding signing for us ,he was a brilliant talent and was only about 22 when he signed ,a masterstroke by Waddo. At the time I was on a residential training course in Birmingham with other lads from all over the country and I was envied by all footy fans.

I've been a Stoke fan for over 40 years and take little notice of what goes on outside of SCFC in the football world. 99% of the foreign players we get linked with I've never heard of

Aye, play for Stoke and you may die. Join the Arse and you'll live... at least a while until you play Stoke. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to play for the Potters and tell our enemies that they may take our Oatcakes, but they'll never take... OUR BOJAN!!!!
