Had it bad last year craig. More irritating than agony but still painful. I did back streching excersises to help with it but in reality you have to ride it out.

I get it regular, it's like toothache without the teeth. You just have to wait until it goes away on its own, painkillers don't help, nor do the exercises the Doctor tells you to do.

I've had it 30 years it's crap , I used to go to a physio for manipulation of the hips . Try to avoid dead lifting , sitting in the car for long periods . Their is a sciatica handbook to give you advice . One exercise you can do is lie on your back , bring your right knee over your left knee and try to touch the floor , rock back and forward , the repeat using other knee

Have had sciatica on and off for years..................happened when I separated my sacroiliac. Was really bothersome at first but has gradually reduced over time and now is mainly gone or at a very low level unless I have to dig the garden or something like that. I found 1. hot/cold packs to be good............cold was particularly helpful in reducing the inflammation in my case. 2.a magnetic belt to be of some help ( has to be high Gauss therapeutic type magnets ). 3.a sacroiliac support belt definitely helped. 4.a hard memory foam mattress has been of real value. 5.a foam cushion for my car seat when driving ( couldn't even drive for more than 15 minutes when I first got it without real pain ).
I found it imperative to get a good stretch right down my affected leg from the back to the heal Tai chi has good exercises for this as does yoga.......or just sitting on the floor holding your toes and making sure you keep your back straight whilst you get the stretch.
Also saw a cranial osteopath who offered some decent help. As said above Pilates can be good too.

Get it checked out. Sciatica can be caused by anything from Piriformis syndrome to a herniated disc.
Some of the stretches you can do for either can make either worse, so be warned.
I speak from experience.

Another here....when it gets cold it gives me gip....I find laying on the floor and tucking my knees up into my chest as tight as possible, and holding that position for 10/15 mins helps me......really stretches my lower back out and in turn the tops of my legs
As other have said though you need to find what works for best for you

I seem to get it more when spending a long time sitting on the computer or sitting in an awkward position, normally leaning on my left arm. I don't seem to have problems with it if i am more active and keeping better posture.

It's a fucking occupational hazard Craig, especially for those of us that pre date the Moving and Handling regs and indeed the use of mechanical hoists. I have had it on several occassions and it does improve with rest. I've also had several slipped discs over the years which also used to go with the territory. You can look forward to being crippled up by the time you retire mate. :-)

It's a curse. I've had four or five sickening bouts throughout my life. No matter what I do it's a six week ride of varying levels of debilitating agony. The last affliction was about four years ago. I've learned to avoid potential triggers: posture, lifting, sleeping in draughts etc. I get the occassional twinge on the top of me foot and I get more serious with the stretching exercises. It seems to be working, touch Woods. Good luck with it, it's horrible. I'm not a fan of cramp either, now that in a sustained blast does come keen.
