I was talking to a couple of my Japanese colleagues over whiskey whilst in Budapest and naturally the conversation turned to football. When they asked me who I support I said "you've probably never heard of them; Stoke City" At this they said "We love Stoke City, we like how the underdog beats the big teams, we also like your tall player". This turned out to be Crouch!
Well what do you know, I never thought little old Stoke would achieve fame as far out as Japan. Anyone else hear of the Japanese love for us or had I just found the two Japanese businessmen who have good taste in football teams?
(Note they said Chelsea and Man Utd are the most popular teams but alot of people have us as their second English Team)

He told you he was Bin Laden's half brother and you believed him.
Wish I had a fiver for everyone I've met who hail from the East End (or say they do) who reckon they are related to the Krays.
Anyway - everyone knows Bin Laden was a Gooner.

I was told by somebody else originally, I had to ask him and yes it was him, there was a quick google as well to make sure my chain wasn't being tugged, that was a common theme of my time in the middle east, full of twisters that place

There was also once a little feature about Rory's throw-in on Japanese TV but this was a couple of seasons after he'd left, weirdly.

People in S.O.T. got to get it into their heads -this is not just about the six towns anymore and stretching out as far as
Newcastle under Lyme or Crewe Maybe
this is global - its worldwide
People have got to wake up to this
to the possibilities - in time we could be one of the top sides in Europe IF we play our cards right

Somewhat overdue sadly
a rather small town mentality sadly holds the club back on this issue
maybe when the real big bucks come in at the end of next season
our ultra risk averse chief executive and his 'happy clapping' stuck in a rut, moribund, static cohorts might move on the 'small potoatos' modification to at least - make the ground look finished on TV

I'm suprised you knew that... It's interesting that once you get outside of the uk (where we are an unpopular club, probably down to media, especially in the early prem days) our stock rises considerably. We could be on the brink of something special!

Not sure if its the history as a race of being quite short, but they absoulutely love crouchy, fascinated by him!

I had a similar conversation out here in KL with a few different locals. The general consensus is that, like you say they like the underdogs. Most of the people who gamble in asia know they have a handicap system (basically the same as in uk but bit harsher) so say for example Utd are playing Burnley, Utd would have a 2goal handicap so they have to win by a 2goal difference or more. Most people just keep betting the underdogs and it pays off when people like us cause upsets. Turns out we cause quite a few high paying upsets, Arsenal, Spurs, Man City and more recently L'pool they love us because we make them money haha I entered a Fifa15 round robin tournament as part of an internations event (good way to meet new people, thought why not) everyone i went up against picked chelsea/bayern/utd/real madrid/barca etc i played with Stoke and although i went out in the semis most of the people in the bar we were in gave me loads of respect for sticking to it everyone had a good time. To top it off, later the bar owner gave me loads of free drinks and changed the live football from Arsenal vs swansea to the Stoke v spurs game just in time to see Bojans goal . Good times!
