Very sad news indeed - he was so unlucky to miss out on the World Cup Final, but I believe that all of the squad received medals just a few years ago

My old mans favourite ever player. Whenever I talked about goalscorers he's always pipe up with "not as good as Greavsie" Hope he pulls through spent my early days watching Saint and Greavsie, fought a few demons in his life and seems like a real good bloke....

Oh, what awful news. Always one of my very favourite players in the 1960s. Come on Greavsie, you're one of the all-time greats, so please get over this illness very soon. Love from all us Stokies xxx.

Top quality striker, he was a genius on the ball and one of my boyhood heroes. Top pundit too, very intelligent and great sense of humour. Get well Jimmy lad, fingers crossed for you.

Always insisted on 'being' Jimmy Greaves in the playground kickabouts. My first trip to the Vic was specifically to see him play for Spurs. Hope he pulls through this.

Sadly...If it's a massive stroke it's probably better if he doesn't pull through Robo Strokes are horrendous and variable happenings for patient and family alike but massive ones are shattering

What's so sad about Jimmy Greaves is he scored so many goals played so many games but he's ,most remembered for a game he didn't play.

The best English player of my football-watching lifetime (50-odd years).
I saw him take two pens in an end of season match at the Vic. Barely a blade of grass on the pitch; I seem to recall the club called for volunteers to poke holes in the paddy field to enable the game to go on. Spurs and Stoke wanted to go on their holidays so they waived their right to a postponement.
John Farmer saved one, or was it both, pens.
Scored on his debut for every team he played for.

I remember this game it was very near the end of the season. We still lost 1-0 even though John Farmer saved both penalties. It was unheard of for Greavesie to miss one let alone two in same game. This was Farmers first season after being discovered playing basketball at Wolstanton Grammer School and he made a great impression for his shot stopping ability. Anyway sorry off subject a bit.....get well soon Jimmy Boy.

Best wishes Greavsey; hope you can beat this one like the booze.
Best England striker ever IMO. He may be 4th on the all time list, but he had the best strike rate and would easily have gone on to set a much higher goal tally. Ramsay dropped him as he wanted younger players looking forward to the defence of the WC in Mexico at altitude and in heat, so Greaves stopped playing for England relatively young. He didn't take penalties for England either and was the leagues top scorer throughout most of the 60s.
Incredible record against some of the roughest, toughest defenders imaginable home and abroad, who wouldn't be allowed to play today.
