The John Lumsden thread made me remember some old photo's i had. This picture was taken on 31st July 1980 at Bass Meadows field in Burton on Trent,it was before a mainly Stoke reserve side played Leicester City in the Bass Charity Vase. After a 1-1 draw Stoke won 7-6 on penalties and went onto beat Burton Albion 2-1 in the final. How many names can you put to faces, some obvious one's but other not.I have the team sheet for this game and will try to find it tomorrow.

Looks like a young Steve Bould on the back row. Looking thrilled at being played as a full back and soon to score the funniest own goal I ever saw

My guesses are: Eric McManus is the keeper with the blonde hair and the porn star moustache. Dennis Thorley crouching in the middle of the front row with the big hair. Peter Griffiths (signed from non-league Bideford) is the short arse standing back row second from right as you face the picture. As I recall young Griffiths was know affectionately by the Stoke fans of the time as "scrote"

I thought that was Phil Heath on the left on the back row, but might be too early for him?

Obviously the days before the internet and the fanzine and so you had no real idea about the merits of anyone we signed until you saw them up close. Funny how you remember these things but the program had a quote saying something like "Stoke City have signed Peter Griffiths from non league Bideford (coach of the time- said 'I think we have unearthed a little gem here'" Imagine today if our big summer signing came from Bideford?! It's Barcelona or bust these days!

I remember Peter Griffiths' debut, and pretty sure it was against Coventry.
I am also pretty sure I recall he actually had a decent game, quick, nimble, and the crowd took to him, or at least appreciated his effort.
He didn't seem overawed at having stepped up a load of divisions in one go
