Looking back, one mystery in life is why were Stoke always a late kick off in the 70's at 3.15pm for home games?

They say it was to do with some shift or other finishing at 3pm. Pits or pots (or maybe Mich?)...

I thought, it was so you didn’t have to rush your last pint before the match started, in those dark days pubs closed at 3pm.

I remember this. I think it was due to the bakery shift.

Think it was the blokes that used to work on PMT (bus service for those that don't remember). Their shift didn't finish till 3-0.

Maybe living in Seattle its a bit difficult to work out Oh and having to deal with all the rain. Lots of rain. All the fucking time GD

Aaaaaah, fond memories of round me Gran's in Waltham Cross having suffered the wrestling and waiting for that late, 3.15 KO, result. Happy times.

How vivid a reminder of how ingrained football was with working person's culture that they would adjust kick off times to suit local industry. Now the kick offs are scheduled around the whims of TV planners in London, New York or LA.

It gave Waddo more time to nip over to the Pub to fetch the players.

It took an extra 15 minutes for the away team to pluck up the courage to face Denis Smith

Yes, as everyone says was due to local industry especially those working Sat mornings. Did however give us chance to see other teams results as games finished about 5.00 pm and half-times scores (remember they were put on a board A-Z alongside Butler Street stand) were always correct (you needed a programme to know which letter represented which game). Happy days (when we won).

This topic has been done a few times on here.
We were not the only ones in the league as a whole, Bury was certainly another with a 3:15 start.
I liked it, it was another thing which made us special, not that we are not special enough anyway.

I've got something niggling away at me that the late kick off time was something to do with the fact that the land had once belonged to the church, and it was part of the freehold that kick off would be at 3:15.
But why the church wouldn't want a 3:00 kick off I have no idea.

Suited me and some of my pals, when I played rugby for Wolstanton Grammar on a Saturday afternoon, KO 2.30. We would have a quick shower after the match and jump in a car of one of the lad's dads and get down to the Vic for them opening the gates half way through the second half and get in for free.

It was definitely shift times in pot banks and it started way before the 1970s. I have a Stoke v Vale programme from 1954 k.o. Time 3.15pm.

I was always told it was about getting folk out of the pub and through the turnstiles...but I was only very young so would believe pretty much anything...some things never change Regardless of why, there were always big queues to get in around 10 minutes to kick off...some things never change

They say it was to do with some shift or other finishing at 3pm. Pits or pots (or maybe Mich?)... Cant imagine it was. Because of Michelin, I worked there for over twenty years, the Saturday day shift finished at 2:00, plenty of time for a few beers in the Gardeners or the Mich clubhouse and still get to the ground before kick off!

The Victoria Ground was indeed consecrated land and previously owned by the Church.
The only restriction I can remember this causing was that we couldn't play at home on Good Friday.

Nowadays they won't even delay the kick off by 10 minutes if there's been a smash on the motorway and the ground's still half full, they've got your money so go fuck yourselves basically.......

This really is bugging me. I don't think that the late kick off was anything to do with shift patterns. My memory is usually pretty good, but this one has got me stumped. It's to do with the church I'm pretty sure. I asked this question back in the 1960's and was given the answer - trouble is .... I can't remember the answer.
