I've got something niggling away at me that the late kick off time was something to do with the fact that the land had once belonged to the church, and it was part of the freehold that kick off would be at 3:15. But why the church wouldn't want a 3:00 kick off I have no idea. Never heard that one. I was always told it was for shift workers as a lad. Suited me and some of my pals, when I played rugby for Wolstanton Grammar on a Saturday afternoon, KO 2.30. We would have a quick shower after the match and jump in a car of one of the lad's dads and get down to the Vic for them opening the gates half way through the second half and get in for free. Suited me as well. Unbelievably this day and age our school (Newcastle High) counted Saturday as a normal school day and lessons didn't finish until 12:40. Just enough time to get back to Silverdale, a quick dinner (not lunch in those days) and back to the Vic for the 3:15 kick off. Happy days!

Aaaaaah, fond memories of round me Gran's in Waltham Cross having suffered the wrestling and waiting for that late, 3.15 KO, result. Happy times. If you ever want to relive memories of Waltham Cross in the 70s, visit Waltham Cross today.

My recollection was that shift workers had time to leave work, get washed and changed (couldn't do it at work then), get to a pub for a drink, then go to the match.

But then I've also heard it was down to the shift workers. We need fullermagic on the case :D

I've been doing google searches to no avail but then I'm not the most patient when it comes to that sort of thing

I do remember playing Chelsea at home in the 70's on a Sunday and it was major thing at the time because of the consecrated ground or somat!! Or maybe my memory is just going/gone!!

As good a reason as any to delay kick off I guess. As for Chelsea game, I remembering going to that, something weird about having to pay for programme to get in and around Sunday rules in 1974 I think.

We need fullermagic on the case you're not getting mixed up with the Chelsea game are you? as Seattle say's you had to by a program to get into that game, I'm sure the church leaders had a say in that game, hence the program buying.

Yeah, I saw that a couple of days ago, but the Sentinel have a history of using 'artistic licence' so I'd prefer a more credible source ;)

Think I'm right in saying that this was the first ever Sunday game in this country. Admission by programme due to some weird Sunday trading law preventing money changing hands at the turnstiles.
