So steal thousands of pounds from the tax payer (in benefits) you (rightly) get sent to prison: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-29603350But if you steal hundreds of thousands of pounds, more probably millions from the tax payer, by avoiding taxes over decades, then lie to the investigators, you can just pay what you should have paid/do a deal/not pay anything. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31459067Both are wrong. Both deserve a severe penalty. But just where is the is the deterrent in the punishment for avoiding tax?

Both are reprehensible and should land you in trouble.
The logic id imagine runs along the lines of HMRC thinking what will cost less to prosecute and what has a higher chance of success; the formality of prosecuting 10 penniless benefits cheats, or one multi millionaire who will be up to his eyeballs in top lawyers and their fees.

Never mind HMRC I am going purple here holding my breath for a few bankers to stand trial in the UK well not a few just one would be nice. As much as we as Brits rip the piss out of America at least a few jail terms have been handed out all a bit pissy for the size of the con the constructed but at least sommat was done.

Thing is though one has already paid £1000's in tax and one has paid well almost nothing and trying to take even more!

Their relative financial positions are irrelevant - dishonesty & theft is dishonesty & theft whatever the social standing/relative wealth of the perpetrator and should be treated accordingly.

Petty much all of us pay £1000's in taxes (as you put it). But some use the money they steal from the rest of us to actually have a half decent life. And it's probably not much better than that. Putting food on their family's tables, a modicum of entertainment. The others use it to fund skiing holidays, luxury apartments round the world, top end cars, etc.

Eminently well qualified for a top ranking job in HMRC, the PPS or government.

Say this though at least ya know what ya going get with em. There aren't many amongst our political leaders who don't come from well-to-do classes. Most of Labour and Lib Dems front benchers are multi-millionaires, just like the Tories. The Lib Dem's leader's "work experience" was in a bank chaired by his father. And our Labour MP for the very working class Stoke on Trent Central is the son of a Baron.

The local Labour MP was not toeing the party line fooked him off and got some puppet up from Westminster. You see that mockumentary UKIP The first 100 days on CH4 last night. An insight into how Britain will turn to shit under a UKIP Election win. The director of the thing Chris Atkins. Well look at him here 2.5 million tax fraud. Don't know how he dares. www.hamhigh.co.uk/news/crime-court/hampstead_journalist_who_exposed_wrongdoing_to_stand_trial_over_alleged_2_5million_tax_scam_1_3342073
