That's true enough I suppose ....but it must have major advantages for someone doing the job if they have played at the highest level , how can you interact with Test match players if you don't understand the nuances of the game at that level ? ....this was the problem when Pietersen was captain an Moores was coach first time around .....Pietersen had no respect at all for the coach ..he said as much afterwards ....and I understand that . If players think that they can only respect a coach/manager who was as good as them, then the pool is going to be very limited. I think KP's feelings said a lot about KP to be honest. Management/coaching and playing are different skills. There's a big crossover between the two, but great player + time does not always equal a great coach. Just think Mourinio. He didn't play football at any level but still manages a bunch of top top footballers pretty successfully. Yes I agree with what you say .....it would be a mistake to hold up Pietersen as a shining example , but I did understand where he was coming from .....I didn't say that a coach had to be a world class test player ...that's unlikely to happen as players of that calibre seem loathe to get involved .....unless it's in the lucrative environment of the commentary box .....but some playing expierience at that level is essential in my opinion to do the job .....just my opinion of course , it may be completely wide of the mark ?

The level someone plays at doesn't how good they'll be coaching/managing (just think TP vs. Bryan Robson). It is more of a management role isn't it. A role that seems to have emerged in the last 10-15 years. Wasn't there just a captain and a tour manager in the 1990's and earlier? (South Africans started well. This could be big (if A.B.D.V. gets going). A strange coincidence that our Coach Peter Moores and his assistant Paul Farbrace ( who ) are both ex wicket keepers , neither of whom played International cricket ....I'm not saying this has any relevance in either sense ....but it's a well know fact that keepers come up short in some areas !

A fitting end looks possible to our damp squib effort to this World Cup.
Come home boys, regroup and get yourselves prepared to shove Glen McGrath's words down his throat - whitewash my arse!

Can't we leave a few of them over there? Well - as many performances have been criminal, I guess you could find some old statute you could use to condem an unworthy few for penal confinement in Van Diemen's Land.

It was interesting watching the last few overs of the New Zealander's run chase. The tail enders never looked like they were going to choke. There wasn't that look of fear in their eyes that we know from England.

If this England team had have been coached by say, The Aussie, S African or New Zealand Coach, would we have made the Q/F or even better?

Patrick, there are a number of things that will not change in the world of cricket. One of them is Glen McGrath predicting an Ashes whitewash, another is little Davie Warner taking Root out for a swift half at a local nightclub... and then duffing him up a bit in order to maintain the established pecking order amongst the world's top order batsmen.
There was a story going around the press gallery in Sydney this week that the Japanese Cricket Association had invited the England team to stop over in Tokyo on the way home - more to undertake a course in Hari-kari than teach the locals how to play cricket. Sorry, but don't shoot the messenger. They fly out today. I doubt there will be a large crowd at the airport to see them off this time around. They must, and the will improve before the Ashes surely.
I can remember a number of poor Australian sides in the past (some really poor) but in honestly I can't remember an England side who have been more humbled in any competition than this one.
On the subject of being a Stokie away from home - Yes Bish, its been 44 years or so supporting the baggy greens- and yes, I do have only one passport and that has a Kangaroo and an Emu on the front cover. Gone native? you bet your sweet bippy I've gone native and am very proud to call Australia my home. A label of being an ex-pat sits terribly with me. An ex-pat is someone who finds themselves temporarily out of the country and living overseas. I visit the UK frequently on business and for family reasons and I enjoy the stay, but it's wonderful to fly back into Sydney coming home. By the way your immigration people stamp my passport with a 6 month visitors visa only - that tells the story.
After saying that, SCFC has been my team for as long as I can remember and will remain so. England as a sporting nation - not so much. I will be sitting up at 2am tomorrow, as usual, with a glass or two of Bushmills and a butty or two as well. (it isn't quite cold enough to have made oatcakes yet) 'You can take the fella out of Stoke but you can't take Stoke City out of the fella'

(it isn't quite cold enough to have made oatcakes yet) 'You can take the fella out of Stoke but you can't take Stoke City out of the fella' Our equivalent in the "whitewash predictor" camp is I. T. Botham. Sadly, for us, your man is right a lot more than ours. The summer is going to be interesting - we are massively underachieving currently. The team is appalling; the players (generally) are more than capable. If we get our act together the summer could still be a good one for us. An over confident Australia team would also be helpful. BTW - like you I am also an exile. But my domicile is a lot closer to the mother country. In my case Scotland, specifically Glasgow hence the Partick moniker - not Patrick! Partick as in Thistle for example, although they actually play in Maryhill.

Is it just me or is that version of the Indian national anthem just one of the worse things I've ever heard in my life? It probably is ........Patrick Patrick indeed. Partick (as well as being my home in Glasgow for a good while) also has some significant resonance for this site generally and our conversations about cricket specifically... The first ever international football game took place at the West of Scotland cricket ground in Partick. Bish, I'm sure you'll recall! A lovely ground - a surprise to many folk that in the heart of one of Glasgow's old heavy industrial districts (Partick, bordering the Clyde was, unsurprisingly, a big part of the ship building industry back in the day) there is a substantial cricket ground. I played there a few times - even scored a 50 once! But that is another story.

Gutted to be back had an amazing experience in NZ. Highlight for me was Christchurch (great stadium, loads of parks and gardens surrounding the city- nice place) and the NZ v Oz match I caught in Auckland. One of my first trips watching England. Does anyone on here do any of the tours abroad? Seriously considering the world t20 in India (in March next year) and then the subsequent Bangladesh winter tour would no doubt be a hell of an experience. Get in touch if you've been out to see England abroad over the years would love to hear your thoughts. On a different note- what a player Brendan Taylor is. It's an absolute scandal that he is t allowed to represent his country anymore now he's signed a county contract. The entire England system is fucked...loving Bob Willis tearing them a new one on the verdict. Brutally honest pundits are always good to see.
