It's new and different so the old school will pour scorn but it makes perfect sense

An interesting read, I hope Stoke are looking to head in that direction as well, Southampton really are the model club at the moment.

black box?
Managers don't interview us, we interview managers?
All sounds a bit David Brent to me.
Sooner all later Southampton will appoint a poor manager, make some poor signings, drift in the league and maybe even get relegated.
That's football. Bar the golden circle of 5 or 6 clubs, nobody else is immune.
It's very well these wank-fest articles being written now, but what about when Southampton struggle?
Ipswich, Charlton, Swansea were all the heralded clubs in the past about how to do things, and somebody else will be after Southampton.
This is taking nothing away from Southampton, by the way, they are having a fabulous season and good for them!

Southampton are the exception rather than the rule.A club should only bring in players the manager wants

Southampton are the exception rather than the rule.A club should only bring in players the manager wants That's exactly how I read what they are doing. Manager says what he wants and they go out and gather prospects, having due diligence. Finally all choose. Normal business practice. Personnel manager draws up a short list having been told what skills to look for, final choice by manager.

On first reading there's no a lot to argue with that.

As Tyson said "Everyone thinks they've got a plan until they get a punch in the throat".
Southampton think they've got a plan but they're one crap appointment from relegation like most of the prem.

As tonight as shown, we still rely pretty much mainly on Sparky going to games and watching players. So much for our "Scouting Network" or the pizza boys.
Im afraid this article shows just how far behind the times we are.
We need to be analysing play of academy players and the first team at Clayton Wood against those we are considering bringing in (not that any of the U21 seemed good enough recently). But as far as im aware aside from a video camera we have nothing like this in place?
We should have systems in place to do all of this, and to move away from just going and watching players. We are a decade behind where southampton clearly are in terms of player recruitment and how theyve structured their club/academy system. It wont work for everyone, and I certainly dont think managers shouldnt have the final say on player recruitment. A halfway house between those philosophies though could suit stoke well. Overarching principles and vision is definitely something we lack at the moment.

Of course they can make a crap appointment but I thought the point was that if someone suddenly up sticks they have a contingency instead of doing rabbit in the headlight impressions.

I'd rather judge a player by watching than some statistical bollocks. I'm sure we do both!

But that's just management bullshit - if someone upsticks how does anyone know who will be available? It's not like Saints can just headhunt any manager in world football. These leaches will always find a way of justifying their own position, usually by talking about risk strategies, blah, blah,

Great article. Great model.
Everything has a shelf life and the next back room structure is no doubt going to emerge in a few year's.

Interesting that they have chosen Southampton for the article who are riding on the crest of a wave, and not clubs like Liverpool, Sunderland and West Brom who have struggled with the same model.
Not convinced by te article to be fair, Les Reed talks a good game but then he did the same when he took over at Charlton and we all know how that panned out....

Great article. It's just sound business advice to plan for disruptions that come when a manager leaves. There are too many teams that have disappeared into the abyss of the football pyramid just because one guy left for another job.
When there are millions of pounds at stake it cant hurt to try and plan for that eventuality. It doesnt guarantee continued success but Southampton really are going from strength to strength

Certainly wouldn't suit Tone, doubt he's on their contingency list. There's a strong whiff of smugness and the worst kind of management bullshit around Mr Reed, him and Brenton would be a dream team.
