Why would you look down your nose at good players who had significant roles in establishing a golden era for this club? It appears to be a product of the same mind set that likes nothing more than to bad mouth the management team that put it all together. It's horrible to read.

230 Premier League appearances some as Captain and a player of the year award (and possibly a Premier League swansong to come) suggests he isn't a 'God awful' footballer. In fact it suggests that's a pretty ludicrous thing to say. He was massively overpriced but domestic transfers of UK players are always overpriced and there was a pretty big sell on fee for Sunderland to pay. Not a player to rave about and by no means a club legend but a solid cog in a fantastic era. He is though. He can't pass, he can't tackle, all's he does is run around like a headless chicken. Darel Russell without the goals. I love a good defensive midfielder who is intelligent and can read the game, Whitehead was never that. He never featured in our best XI in his time here, he should have been no more than a bit part player. I suppose Messrs Mcarthy, Keane, Pulis, Mowbray and Karanka see it differently.

Cos from memory he was never far from being an ever present in the side for our first (and best) couple of prem seasons...

He'd play, we'd do badly, he'd do badly, he'd get dropped and we'd magically get better. Funny that.

The first two I have no respect for as managers, the same for Mowbray. I shall say I do for Tone........

We signed him in our second season and he was an ever present in what was a decent but unremarkable season. The following season our form picked up after he was dropped.

Fuck me, we endured him for that many games? I take it from your vitriolic hatred of a player that played his part in the resurgence of SCFC then you don't rate him as a footballer. For the record he has played over 500 hundred professional games throughout his career ( and still plays for a promotion chasing team) and he's wank. Yes or no so we can all understand your level of knowledge ( not opinion) of a footballer for this and future threads.

At least you've clarified your knowledge and understanding of football up for all to see especially as it differs from professional managers, coaches etc. Cheers for that for future posts on any footballing related subject

I do love your view on football though, sit down and just nod to what the professionals have to say. It makes this place, twitter and pub irrelevant. "Good game wasn't it that Dave?" "No Barry, Lineker said it was crap". I mean what the fuck?

He failed to appear in just 9 games in his first three seasons? That surely isn't true, unless of course you're clouding the issue by including sub appearances? He certainly didn't start all bar 9 games in his first 3 seasons. Regardless, he was still crap. Not as bad as Collins and donko but still crap.

Best game had for us was the night match against Man City in the cup.... I'm old and not got a good memory but it was late in the match and deano made lung bursting run from right back to their left back .. Could of been the year before we played them in the final, think we won in extra time. ??? .... He put every effort into every performance he made for my club & I will never slate a footballer who does that. Including big Dave Bamber!!!!

He failed to appear in just 9 games in his first three seasons? 'Appear' or Start? He was dropped for the West Ham quarter final in favour of Whelan and we were largely brilliant from then on.

For me I thought whitehead was a steady footballer for us and I certainly wouldn't call him shite. I thought his best game for us was away in Tel Aviv where he scored one and set up the other.
