I did, but not today - postal vote since I've been on polling duty from 6.30 this morning until 10.15 this evening.
Can understand why people don't vote given the poor quality of most of the local politicians, but also feel that, if you don't vote, you shouldn't complain about your Councillors.

I voted for the candidate who
a) bothered to put a leaflet through my letterbox and
b) expressed opposition to the recent council-tax budget which confirmed everyone's fears that all public services are apparently now dispensible so long as you can shave a penny a day off the bill. What do they teach these cunts in school today?
I didn't have a Nazi standing in my ward, thank fuck, The old girl I voted for doesn't stand a chance but god love her for standing. You can bury me a Chartist.

duane79, bebester So my sister who lives on her own, who doesn't need to do anything for anybody but actively gets involved in the local affairs, created a childrens playground on a run down area, helps to organise summer fairs, xmas fairs, helps out locals, campaigns on issues for people in her area is toss? I'm sure I'd have to agree that if you step back and think again perahps you may reconsider your accusations? the local elections are about local people and what they do at local level, she isn't a coucillor but was asked to stand by the local people as an independent to go against the people who they feel have let them down, she has to help them, quite a few people have given up their time and money to campaign and distribute leaflets. She could have just shut her door and said no, i want an easy life from my sofa and call everybody else toss edit - yes I did vote.

I've been on polling duty from 6.30 this morning until 10.15 this evening. Serious question RBJ - hoping you or someone else can answer. Why don't NuL and SOT start counting votes until 10am on Friday? ZMD, Largely because many of the people who do the Count are also polling officers/clerks on Thursday - myself included - will have been on duty from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm, + about 1/2 hour at either end to set up/pack up, which is a 16 hour day. To ask them to go and do the Count in the evening/early morning is verging on inhuman, and very tired people are more prone to make mistakes. Doing the Count can be quite stressful as well with the candidates and party supporters hovering around - feels a bit like I imagine it is being an animal in the zoo. The Count I was involved in today didn't finish 'til about 2.00 pm, so a 16 hour day on polling duty + 6 hours on the Count = 22 hours virtually without a break if the Count is done in the evening/early morning - not even Junior Drs work that long without a proper break!

Thanks for the reply. It wasn't a criticism. I was just curious as to how it works behind the scenes.
Cheers.
