Hawksbee & Jacobs on Talkshite are doing a piece on Shawcross to Italy this afternoon as well. It was a good debate on Murrays' show this morning. 4 phone calls, a Shit fan, Spurs Liverpool fans all said they would take him in a heartbeat, the other call was Robin of P&g fame who reckons Ryan is too quiet!! Seems he is more highly regarded than some on here think. Yeah I heard that too. Sounds like sensible supporters want defenders who can actually defend...............to think that Geoff 321 ( our resident naysayer ) was arguing that we overrate him because he's playing for our team...........bollocks do we he happens to be very good at his job. I hope we don't sell him but if we do it should be for way over 10 million as far as I am concerned.

Hawksbee & Jacobs on Talkshite are doing a piece on Shawcross to Italy this afternoon as well. Seems like it's 'Shawcross Friday' on Talksport. It took a little while for me to decipher what the speed talking Colin Murray was on about {Babelfish required}, but he had a Ryan Love-In and a mini phone in. Liverpool, Spurs and Man Utd fans all wanting the services of Shawcross with a valuation of £15+mill on his yead. Our unofficial correspondent Young Robin was on. He perpetuated the myth that Ryan doesn't talk, but I think it was his attempt to dampen the enthusiasm. Anyways H&J will be talking to Higgy about our captain very soon, they trailed this interview by saying that 'Mark Hughes is concerned that he won't be able to hold on to Ryan'. This will be an edgy xmas if this gains a head of steam.

The Roma rumour might be a little off the mark but someone, somewhere is surely putting Ryan's name out there sadly. He IS in my mind our most saleable asset and as it stands Shawcross IS Mr Stoke City too; be very disappointing to lose him in January.
Heard a bit of the Colin Murray stuff but missed all the calls, did anyone inform him that it wasn't Mark Hughes who appointed him our captain? Heard Perry Groves suggest that Mark Hughes trusted him so much as to make him our captain, just wanted someone to inform him that he simply maintained his role, although I guess that in itself shows that both Pulis and Hughes hold him in high regard.
As for Robin; boy or girl?

I still find it staggering that after 7 years in the Premier League we've not been forced into selling a SINGLE ONE of our better players. Is there another club that has been in the Premier League that long that can say that? Yes, set me wondering who the last player we sold who actually went on to do something was. By 'do something' I mean at the very least go on to play 100 + games for another club in the top flight. Ben Foster, did he manage that? Never really played for us first in the first place in any meaningful way though did he?

If we sell Ryan Shawcross we are in for a very tough second part of the season I'm afraid! I don't want us to sell him, but if we do, please not in January!

We literally can't afford to sell him.
It would be total suicide.

You really do have to question who you would replace him with.

Sadly the only 'fantasy' element at play here is that which suggests a small provincial football club can be self-financing and stay in the Premier League. Selling Ryan would be an error of judgement on a par with the illustrious predecessors who thought getting rid of Stan Mathews was a bit of a plan! Couldnt agree more Wuzza!!, this "self financing" mantra is just folly!..nice idea but just aint going to happen.. Mills - 1) Thats my opinion Im allowed it just like you are allowed yours!...if you think that we would stay up with our current leaky defence then fair play...but i think you are talking shit, Shawcross going would send us down. even if we manage to survive this season, with our current transfer policy we would be very lucky to uncover someone who could plug the gap on a shoestring (I say shoestring in terms of FEE, not wages/signing on fee) 2) The "Real" world is one that I very much live in, but I also live in a world where i dont want to us going back to selling the crown jewels..our history is litered with it and what has invariably followed is a period of decline straight afterwards, some of which took decades to pull ourselves out of. Shawcross more than anyone else in the squad is in my opinion the most irreplaceable player that we have, club captain, the rock at the back..who would replace him? Huth (Old and i dont think we will ever see the berlin wall back to his best again), Wilson is a walking mistake, Muniesa is totally unproven at centre half although he had a good game against the arse (he's pants as a full back though) Tex no one knows, who else? dipping into the transfer market would be again unknown. The only thing we do agree on is that he wont go in January!

Well arguably all football clubs except the Global Brand / Champions League elite could be classed as 'small provincial football clubs'. In the long term these 'small provincial football clubs' including Stoke City are going to have to be self-financing or football as we know it has no future.

Shawcross is the last player we want to be getting rid off, at least if we got rid of Bego, we would have Butland, if we got rid of N Zonzi, we still have Whelan and Sidders and if we got rid of Bojan, wed still have Adam/Ireland. If we get rid of Shawcross, weve got fucking GCam or Muni taking over from him as Huth probs wont get another chance. One of them alongside Wilson permanently, we might as well wave goodbye to the Premier League.

......and on Alan Brazil this morning, the London journo guest was talikng about how Shawx should be given another England call up as the best example of a traditional centre half, something he reckoned the current squad lacks.

To sell the best central defender in the UK in January would just be madness! I would accept £20M in July (not that I want us to sell!), but not now!

I put up a post weeks ago relating to Shawcross going in January but over eager admin removed it almost immediately. At the time I wasnt told of a club other than to expect a major departure.
In all honesty Shawcross must be pretty fed up doing most of the defending himself.

And this is why Shawcross is being touted for a call up whilst in a Stoke shirt because should he leave it'll be 'well, we thought he was good enough to represent England whilst at Stoke'. The usual bollocks.

Why is it so hard to believe that top clubs from OTHER leagues might be interested in a top quality, no nonsense centre half? It's out of the blue but they're definitely not stupid in Italy. They know what's good on the continent, and let's not bullshit, Italy knows a good centre half.

It's not total pie in the sky, I heard an interview with Roma's Italian/American (or Canadian maybe?)owner before the Man City Champions League game and he was saying how he's actively looking at the British market for players. If they've got an active scouting network in the UK stands ro reason Shawcross would impress if they've seen him this season.
Was the Man City game after our trip to The Etihad? If so they would have had their backroom team there watching Shawcross keep Aguero in his back pocket.

Perfect Italian centre half - no nonsense touchy feely defender.
In the end it will be down to the player. I'd hope he would see the season out then move if he wants. Gives us more time to get in a decent replacement.

People who think he wouldn't be tempted by a move to Rome, to play for a league challenging side and have a chance of proving himself in the champion's league are surely not thinking about it enough?
I would love him to stay, but if I was his agent I would be pushing this through. He either a) loves it and has an amazing long spell career in Italy, b) does so well that he moves to a big English club or c) does not do well at all, so comes back to Stoke for a massively reduced fee having only missed out on two or three seasons of mid table finishes. Even if Stoke got relegated he'd get a move to a recently promoted Premier League side.
The downsides of this move failing are relatively small compared to the massive possible upsides.
The only real positives are the fact it's the Sun (which means it could be completely made up) and if it is true, at least we'd be able to afford somebody experienced and half decent to come in and hold Muniesa's hand for a season or two while also helping out the bank balance.
I don't think anybody wants Ryan to go, but we'd be a pretty big collection of shithouses if we didn't wish him well on this.
