The player isn't exactly blameless - he did wind up the opposition fans after he scored the penalty - so, in a potentially volatile match, the ref could probably have sent him off for that. No one comes out of it well - the fan who first attacked the player probably faces a jail sentence with bans for the other fans who came on the pitch and both clubs will face fines and other sanctions I should think.
And it might all have been avoided if the player scoring the penalty hadn't decided to wind up the opposing fans.

Botty prober,
Maybe he should have put together a nice letter apologising for the temerity of scoring a goal in a derby match

GD GD, if I wind someone up at a football match it doesn't overly surprise me if they want to beat the crap out of me! If I were lucky enough to be able to play professional football, personally, I'd do most of my celebrating with my own fans. But then I'm a known coward!

Liverpool fans are already demanding a full and thorough investigation and demanding that the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire resign immediately.

Almost as crazy as that Serbia and Albania match!
Cant believe that one has been awarded to Serbia!
We complain about getting a harsh deal, but even we haven't been awarded a 3 0 defeat after violence by the opposition supporters.
