My absolute 'what-am-I-putting-myself-through-this-for' moment was the Bescot play-off disaster.

I think i would have to say the day lou finally upped & left for Celtic for me. We were on a roll at the time & heading for really good things i was totally gutted & i only really got over it when we made the premier league.

Walsall away followed closely by Nuneaton away (I paid twice to watch that), Liverpool 0-8 at home.

Losing the second leg of the play off semi final against Leicester. We were so close to the Promised Land I could taste it, and having secured 0-0 at their place without too much trouble, I felt it was already written for us to go to Wembley and finish the job.
I drove all the way home (90 miles), in the dark, overtaken by carloads of Leicester fans, scarves flying out of the windows as though they were taunting me personally. Definitely the lowest point I have ever felt.

Any of the play-off defeats, because, unlike a Cup game, it affects the entire next season.

Stoke 2 Man City 5 and the reality hitting that we'd once again sunk back to the third tier. The 92/93 all seemed in vain. Dark times indeed

It was the binary season and I lived in Dubai. i had traveled back and been to 7...yes 7 games where we didn't score a single goal.I decided in my madness to come back for QPR away and I think it was a friday night game.I stood on the open terrace in the pouring rain in my feckin work suit as we failed to muster a single shot on goal.I was so close to turning my back on my beloved club and finding something more worthwhile to do.As a fanatical stoke supporter for more than 40 years its the first time and only time I have come so close.Glad i didnt

Leicester in the play off and Gary fucking Parker. Brum 0-7 at home.
These are the stand outs for me. The infamous cup defeats hurt at the time but most teams have been on the wrong end of a cup upset and they are one off games.

Agree with the birmingham one 0-7. I remember being outraged shouting obscenities at the end of the match" you buggers" etc

I was shocked when Stoke sold Greenhoff because I knew that meant relegation, he was the heart and sole of the club.
But it wasn't till the start of the 77-78 season and I looked at the fixture list and it sunk in that Stoke were no longer a top flight club that I felt totally gutted.

Losing at home to Crewe 2-0 just before the Birmingham defeat
They passed the ball between themselves for long periods and we couldn't get it off them(they took the piss)

one that sticks in my mind is the season before we got promoted when we drew 1-1 with hull and nicky barmby scored in the last minute ,i think it was our last home game.id been so sure we were going to make the play-offs that year and was so deflated after watching that goal loop in.not as high profile as a few but one that i always remember.

another one that springs to mind is losing at home to the vale in the autoglass the year after we won it. i think we had about 30 shots on goal and steino missed a penalty and they had one shot and robin van der laan scored. i remember being absolutley gutted!
