Afterall they sold their best players, brought in a new manager and were tipped by many to find themselves down there.
In comes Koeman and he's doing a great job whereas we look so pedestrian to the point where I can't believe it with the pace we've got.
Find it amazing that we look so shite.

Good scouting, had their spending spree and mostly done it well with a couple of exceptions, and sunk millions into developing young talent over the years.
Who'd a thunk it eh?

Thats the sort of question its best not to ask ! The answers probably would make us feel rather less smug than we did at the begining of the season.

Years of doing the right thing off the pitch developing players and an ethos and continuing it. See Swansea last week. We've been at it for 18 months - remarkable really how well we did last season. Then again I did tell you all this 3 years ago.

I think on our day we can be easily, but that day is too little and far between. I think it's going to take a couple more seasons for us to be at our carpet footballing best

It's because they've sold all of their best players, that were nurtured through their youth academy for peanuts, for a massive profit and reinvested a portion of that money very wisely. Whilst Southampton were doing that, we were busy chucking 3-5M at the likes of Dave Kitson and Ibrahima Sonko only to sell them for nothing a few years later.
We only have Begovic and Shawcross of real value to show for our Premiership money and selling either of those would kill us.
We're worlds apart.

We get this every year don't we, some similar sized club who are better than us at that moment. Most have gone by the wayside while we've plodded on. Southampton do however look the real deal.
Why can't we be like them? Well i suppose we could, but it's really really really really difficult. That's why there is only one team currently like them.

Because you didn't go in to administration and get your debt cleared, whilst putting your local small suppliers out of business, and being fortunate enough to drop down a couple of divisions and being able to start again, whilst also fortuitously discovering a Welsh chimpanzee called Gareth from Swindon that was very good at football and be able to sell him for a nice fat profit, and in the meantime also finding a couple of English lads that the money-spunking muppets from Merseyside took a bit of a shine to.

All well and good criticising previous transfer policies but the truth is they served their purpose in that (against everyones expectations) we stayed in the division season after season raking in all the associated revenues. Our problems are more short term - we have gone for quantity not quality and as a result have a squad largely full of players who can turn it on occaisionally but have no consistency whatsoever. We under invested in the summer and havent been as clever as we thought were.

We got 'tatered today by a team that was stronger than us, quicker than us, and more skillful than us. We didnt have control of the ball for more than a few seconds. OK, at one none, we still might have nicked something, but its pretty turgid stuff we are dishing out at the moment and a long way from what we expected this season.

We can be as good as Southampton or any other club. But the people at the top have to drive it and not keep changing things because the fans moan. The owner of Southampton sacked there GEO ,the owner of Southampton sold players who did not want to stay, the owner replaced a successful manager with a manager who played with flair and encourages flair, the Southampton owner also backed there manager with cash. If she had listened to the moaning fans she would of sold the club and fucked off instead of planning for the future. Our chairman as backed the club and backed a manager for 10 years(6 years in the prem has repaid all that)then when some of the so called fans said they don't like what they are watching he sacks the manager. We all thought we were going to make a bold appointment to change the style of play. No we employ a manager with no tactical no how ,did not strength the team with better players, and plays a formation that Mark Bowen tells him the Oatcake managers want.

After nine games we are asking why we can't be as good as Southampton, yet numerous posters pre season were forecasting them to struggle.
The daftest thing we can do is look at the League after nine games and assume anything, they've appointed a manager with a good track record but I'm not sure they will finish above us.
When I first came on this Board WBA were being touted as the great example of how to play football.
There needs to be a lot of patience now because getting above last seasons finish will be an enormous task, but there's a long way to go yet.
We have one of the best managers in the League so we should stop envying other clubs, in my opinion.

No tactical know how, didn't strengthen the team, plays formations he is told to yet still we score more goals, win more matches and get more points and finish higher than we ever have. It's a head scratcher all right.

Didnt the go into admin when all this was happening so they were forced down that route, plus a couple of up and down seasons. If that had happened to us it would of been back to 10000 fans.
