Stafford to Gardeners Retreat for Ken's Peddy. Leave at 2.35pm, in for 5 to. Back in Gardeners for 10/15 past 5. Few more Peddy's to let traffic die down.
Standard Saturday, and I still miss it immensely.

Similar, meet up with mates in/around Rugeley area then park up in gardeners, have a few beers and a chin wag then off to the game, it was so much easier then rather than the shitty car parking chaos at the Brit

1960's Bentilee-Hanley bus, walk down thru Shelton. Before the low-bridge, corner of Station Road was a garage with a small corner area fitted with cold-drink vending machines, great. Then onto the Vic. gates opened about 12.30. Got my usual place in the Boothen, on the 'step' and when the ground loudspeaker kicked in always played 'Telstar' Simple journey home except Stan's return took me 3 hours.

Such great memories reading these posts.....it was an amazing time being a Stoke supporter...a brilliant ground right in the middle of a town...so many options on match day...which pub...walk it or bus it...all standing together....I really do miss it....

Match days usually went one of two ways for me. 1. I got a lift from Silverdale to Stoke with my Mum & Dad, who were season ticket holders and parked in Bath street before the short walk down to The Vic. 2. For the full big match experience I used to get a lift or a bus up to Clayton in the morning to meet with my mate Keith Baddeley before walking down to watch the 'A' team at Lilleshall road. In retrospect, this was a fantastic tradition and we often used to stand with first teamers like George Eastham, Banksy and TC who had turned out themselves to watch the boys play (can you imagine that happening these days?). I even remember one morning having to push Eastham's old Ford Consul to get it started after his battery went flat It made me feel proud to see some of the players I had stood cheering on a Saturday morning eventually breaking through into the first team (Like Inchy, Garth Crooks and Bomber Sheldon) and occasionally we got to see more famous players coming back from injury and easing themselves back into the game (like WBA keeper John Osbourne, who was a true gent and came to talk to us kids who had been ribbing him from behind the goal) From here, it was a steady walk over Penkhull, a bag of chips in Stoke before taking up our usual place behind the goal on the Stoke End. Happy Days

My dad used to park on the Leek road coming out of Abbey Hulton towards lime kiln, his mate lived on that road so we would walk up together. I was 4 the first time I did that journey and it seemed like it took a full day to get there and taking 3 steps to their one was some task! Them were the days

Stoke train station (from West Yorkshire via Manchester Vic & Pic.). Glebe (or the odd time the Roebuck), Harrys bar, Gordon/Charlie Browns, Sealion/(Tony) Gray's corner, Staff of life, Talbot, Wheatsheaf, Vic and after game, either of the 2 social clubs and anywhere on way back to station. Didn't always do all of them in one go, but not far off! Good days.

I lived in London Road and it took me all of about 5 minutes to walk to the ground. I could see the floodlights come on from our window.Been living in New Zealand for the last 52 years but maybe get a trip over to see the new ground. From the map it looks to have been built close to the old Stafford Colliery pitch which I played on a few times as a ring in under assumed name as I was playing in the Staffordshire League

I started out as a kid catching a train from Bucknall and walking to the Vic from Stoke Station. A far better arrangement than trying to get in and out of the 365.

My Grandma lived in Darnley Street Shelton. Me and me old man would go there for Satdee lunch, usually a six of chips from the chippy on the corner of Darnley Street and Bowey Road. We would walk to the ground down Bowey Road onto Leek Road under Glebe Street Bridge through the Church Yard onto Wheeldon Road to the ground. This was in 1960s. Darnley ST. I was a Shelstonian. Cauldon Road. 20 secons walk from Darnley St! Seaford St then we moved up market to Cauldon Rd Shelton. Every walk back from the Vic was ‘eventful’ as we had to walk past Station Rd.....

We parked by Uncle Tom's Cabin, into the sweet shop and short walk to the ground. Could never be nostalgic and say what a thing of beauty the walk was, was a chap who seemed to own 1 vest who stood outside a terraced house that looked like it had no furniture in, a kind of tanned Danny DeVito who asked every passer by the score on the way back.

When I was (nearly) old enough to drink my walk was from the Sealion, sometimes popping in the Victoria Hotel (my Dad and Uncle knew the landlord - think he was called 'crazy horse' or something similar) or if we had complimentary tickets left over we'd go in the supporters club opposite the ground to try and find someone we knew that could make use of them.
When the Sealion was no more we used to go the Conservative Club, bit shit but you could always get served quickly and easily and there was often a couple of ex players in there.

Mainly 70's, Bus or Train from Stafford. Always went into the Weatsheaf in Stoke Centre before the game. Then a ten minute walk through the maze of terraced houses and back streets, arriving at the Stoke End to get the atmosphere. If I could get round I used to do a circuit of the ground round the Boothen end and Butler Street car park. All part of the routine. For some reason then I used to like standing at the back of the Stoke end as you got a good view and perspective of stuff around you.

I used to work in Chesterton, across from where Arnold Clark is now, Brymbro lane, night games I would walk from there, setting off at 5pm,along A34 into castle, up to Hartshill, head for Penkhull bank, get my bag of chips in Stoke and still have an hour to wait for kick off! It must have been fun walking back.
