Who else legged it to the Vic back in the day?....My journey started in Albert Street, top end of Castle...down through Hartshill and down Stoke bank past St Dominic's...through the town centre and into the Boothen paying 40 pence.....and walking back again after the match.....let's hear a few more "journeys" to the ground....

I remember walking down a long street of terraced houses with my dad after parking in Michelin car park. A lot of the houses had ceramic horses in their windows. Must have been a seventies fashion. Funny how kids remember little details like that.

Caught bus from Madeley to castle, met mates & walked from Buckley Row in Castle; long time ago, but seem to remember walking thru the hospital & so must have ended in Penkhull and down to the Vic. Only for a while tho', soon as we passed driving test we became lazy & drove!

All done in bovver boots and greatcoats, ha ha I feel I was there with you (aside from the train spotting...). Not that I lived on the Westlands, but a lot of my friends did. I was once made to remove my Luftwaffe insignia from my greatcoat by a policeman at Coventry away in about 1974. I also feel I was with the Albert St poster above. I made that journey many many times. Most memorably when setting off for FA Cup SF tickets in 1971 - leaving home after MoTD and queuing all night for said tickets outside the ground in sleeping bags. Temperature was below zero that night. From the age of 15 we used to pop in to the Sea Lion or Talbot to fuel up - both openly sold alcohol to minors. Great days.

I can still smell the bogs at the Stoke end. When I was 15 I used to wait outside the bakery at Trent Vale and on a Friday night work the night shift if there were vacancies. One sat morning at 6 am when I had finished me and a mate hitch hiked from the bakery all the way to Coventry arriving there just 10 min before kick off only to find an empty Highfield Rd cos the game had been postponed at mid day. It was freezing and we ended up getting a train from Coventry and nipping out at Etruria before the ticket guy spotted us.

Kiplings, AKA "Cake End". Once went to Coventry (by that time in the car) - parked car at 3.00. 3.02 heard big roar from ground. Started to run towards Highfield Rd. 3.07 heard second roar. As we went through the turnstile at 3.10 - in those days the away chaps went in the West End with the home fans - heard a third roar. We were 3-0 down. Think we lost 5-2.

I used to work in Chesterton, across from where Arnold Clark is now, Brymbro lane, night games I would walk from there, setting off at 5pm,along A34 into castle, up to Hartshill, head for Penkhull bank, get my bag of chips in Stoke and still have an hour to wait for kick off!

My Grandma lived in Darnley Street Shelton. Me and me old man would go there for Satdee lunch, usually a six of chips from the chippy on the corner of Darnley Street and Bowey Road. We would walk to the ground down Bowey Road onto Leek Road under Glebe Street Bridge through the Church Yard onto Wheeldon Road to the ground. This was in 1960s.

Down Whieldon Road, under a couple of bridges then across the Butler Street carpark.
Barely recognise it now with the road changes.

Used to park in Bilton Street and walk past Uncle Toms, stop off at the sweet shop and left along Campbell Road to the Boothen End.
Miss the place. So easy to get to.

Who can reply walking past stoke station towards the junction with stoke road, on the corner was a small garage with a raised platform and 3 or 4 vending machines? Great early refreshment before long walk to ground.

Lived in Hanford so it was straight down Campbell Road from Hanford roundabout for me, past the mich and the line of trucks. We used to find a good-sized stone at the beginning of the walk and try and kick it along the road all the way to the ground without losing it. Took about fifteen minutes door to door.

Before we got EDUCATED , we used to walk from Castle to Stoke , calling in Getanas (I think it was called then ? ) because they would serve any body lol , and then the wait outside the ground to see if it kicked off , and then into the supporters club opposite for a few more under age beers , and then the long walk home to Castle back up that fking bank/hill/mountain depending on how much pocket money we had saved lol . A few years later we found out we could get the train to Longport or Etruria because the ticket inspector used to go missing on a Saturday after a Stoke match lol . Somebody put about the smell from the bogs in the Boothen , is it only me ? but the only smell I can remember was Hot Dog sausages ?

From half way up Richmond street, down into Stoke, sometimes stopped at the old public gents half way down the hill (I was little), through stoke via the newsagents for my old man's snuff and my extra strong mints, past the away end and down the road, narrowly avoiding an always hungover looking Peter Hewitt, past the programme sellers and even a few players (I always remember thinking how poncey Inchy heath was for having his name on his car), round the corner, through the turnstiles, up the steps and onto the Boothen end. Crikey that was always an amazing feeling, from the early seventies to the poor old girls final death. There was nowhere like it, ramshackle and grotty though it was. The new ground has got a long way to go

Same route for me too Cauldon Rd, Leek Rd, past the station etc. The walk to and from the Vic was a major part of the " match day experience" in the 70s and 80s. Talk about eventful.... Used to use the Roebuck and then the Glebe on the way down. Happy days!

Great early refreshment before long walk to ground. We used to put our hands up inside the machine and nick the cups. Sorry if your dishwater / oxtail soup ever dropped straight into the spill tray mate. It was probably my fault....

I grew up in the shadow of the Vic. I just had to leave my house and walk about a hundred yards or so down Boothen Old Road, past my old Infant/Junior school (St Peter's as it was then).

Me and my dad did the same watched Motd then went the ground and joined the que. Always remember us kids playing footy in the morning whilst waiting for the ticket sale to start and there were what seemed like thousands of dads cheering us on, great adventure at the time. I originally from Grove avenue Heron Cross and used to walk from there to the ground as a nipper.

I lived in Dresden as a teenager in the 70's and walked to every home game. Used to meet my mates by Longton Park, and then walk down Drubbery Lane, up Blurton bank to Heron Cross traffic lights, and then down Whieldon Road, and then walk back after the game. We got into the routine of having a few cans on the way to the match, and then stopping for pie and chips at the chipshop on Whieldon Road on the way home. Used to take us ages and we got soaked many a time when it was raining.

There were a few from school (BTM) Newcastle, that walked from Knutton, Silverdale and bottom of Clayton Bank that we used to meet at the bottom of Albert Street. Stoke scarves tied to our wrists, Oxford bags and dockers on (and Slade Socks from Hayden's) walking into Stoke. Remember one lad had the latest Slade album on official cassette and we all had it for one night each to listen to. I remember having a feather cut and hanging around the front entrance asking for complimentary tickets from the players. Banksia and TC obliged I recall. My dad used to time his entry to follow the plain clothes police through that little red door at the side of the shop at the Stoke end. The door would open and the police went in, followed by my dad who always wore a dark blue Mac and shirt and tie...they assumed he was a copper...he then made his way round the crowd and remarkably ended up with us in the Boothen, complete with pint and a Park Drive.....Bloody great days..

An essential part of my growing up. Walked to every home game from my grandad's house in Duke Street, Fenton, escorted by my dad, two uncles and a couple of cousins. My Grandfather didn't usually come, but his house acted as a gathering place for the clan. Through Heron Cross and down to the Vic. It seemed quite a trek to those little legs back then, but it made a man of me. None of my family were big drinkers, so a pre-match visit to a pub was not part of the routine; it still isn't for me, even though I like a pint or two like anybody, but a pint before the match is just not etched into my DNA.

Hi, This looked like a very good thread to ask for some help I have with a project about the Victoria ground. I am an artist who draws football grounds amongst other things. I have started to draw some of the older grounds and I get asked for The Victoria ground a lot. Its a big challenge due to lack of photos of the ground. I am only interested in a vista from a fan's approach. I like to draw the houses around the ground too. Here is my website - www.urbancolours.co.ukI have a few pics to work from. I want to draw the Main Stand as approached from the street with the club shop on the right. Can someone tell me the name of the street and whether that house (shop) is still there? Any photos of this street past or present and any other pics of the Main Stand would be really welcome. I have worked liked this for my prints of Highfield Rd and The Manor Ground and would appreciate any help here. I am happy to offer a print of the final image in exchange for any pictures that have what I need to finish the drawing. Cheers
