the so called "death tax" is being abolished, who will benefit from this? my guess is the wealthy who can afford to leave their dependants a wad of assets announced on the same day that they promise a benefit freeze for two years[in real terms a cut] have they just lost the next election?

So you're happy for your family members to have to pay 55% on any monies inherited through your pension, even if they arn't taxpayers cos they don't earn enough money? Are these the rich people you're referring to?

Guess again, only the "death tax" on inherited pension funds has been scrapped meaning when someone dies the government doesn't take 55% of the pot, income from pension funds continues to be taxable so whoever the pension fund pays out to gets taxed as normal.

When you have a system where the gap between the rich and poor is so big then those at the top of the pay scales lose sight of the daily struggle to survive. When you get someone who gets paid £450 as a consultancy fee for looking at an ill or injured animal for ten minutes , then you know that society has got it all wrong. There are food banks in every town and village these days . The problem is already at crisis levels. Every Saturday morning in Aldi you see poor people having to put food back at the checkouts because they can't afford even essential items. I know that you won't have seen this yourself , because you don't shop in such places but there are those of us who do and care . For most people it's human instinct , but for others it's just a case of ' I'm alright jack , and fuck the rest '. Have a walk around your nearest council estate. Have a look at what they're wearing. Have a look at what years of social deprivation can do to someone . Have a look at what the minimum wage pays you .... Then have a word with yourself.

Calling it "a daily struggle to survive" is an insult to those who have lost everything in the middle east, or are living through drought in Africa.
How many people have died through starvation mumf, or does getting your Sky subscription cancelled count ?
There's many inequalities in the system, I know because I've recently tried to help someone out with a claim, and found it wanting. But Stans basic premise, that no welfare system should bring in more than a full time job, surely you can't disagree with that ?

Redstriper.....you and your wife earn by your own admission £90,000.
My advice to you is to try it. Try living on the minimum wage. Try paying the bills , paying for food etc ....What you have just spent to watch the golf the other week , is more than most people have to survive on for a whole week. You see I have a very good memory for such things.
Don't make the error of trying to draw parallels with Africa or suggest that I'm attempting to insult people who are suffering from starvation. It's not fair or right to do so.
By all means , tell the world you're rich , but have more compassion and thought for those who are not.
If you can't do either....then vote Conversative.

I wonder how many of the tory cabinet have faced hard challenges like that? thankfully im in a better place these days and have no more financial worries, but I still feel for my fellow working man. everytime the government give something to their mates eg lowering the top rate for tax from 50% to 40% this money has to be recouped elsewhere and it is allways the poorest who are hardest hit.

The minimum wage and tax credits have generally done fuck all other than increase costs elsewhere and shift the problem to the tax payer who has to foot these populist Labour policies now and forever thanks to increased government borrowing. And, if people make no effort at school or are genuinely bone idle, then in most cases their situation is their own fault. It's always someone else's fault with the left. I know many people who in their minds are 'struggling' but when you see what they get for doing fuck all they should consider themselves very lucky. Many people are getting tired of the never ending Labour 'woe is me' bullshit - especially after they left nothing but two buttons and a ferret for the Tories to sort the nation out with.

Should I ever become ill and be unable to work I'm not sure how we'd cope on the benefits available. That said if benefit levels were increased, then even more people would take to claiming benefits rather than going to work (I'm not saying everyone on benefits is a dosser, before anyone gets the hump).
I'd gladly vote for any party that could solve this issue and pay the people who are in need of help more, whilst paying those who can't be arsed to help themselves less/nothing.
The Tories seem to want to clobber everyone other than the well off whilst Labour want to throw our money at the wasters (The Lib Dems can just fuck off).

The problem with our current benefits system, whether managed by Labour or the Tories, is that billions are wasted on 'general' benefits when those that genuinely need more struggle to get what they deserve. Our welfare system has been well and truly sussed by generations of shirkers who know how to play the game using every trick in the book. Labour keep pandering to these people purely for votes.

Couldn't agree more, although the Tories have cut child benefit for the higher paid during this parliament. A long way to go though, why anyone thinks paying Alan Sugar a winter fuel allowance or giving Her Maj a free TV licence allowance is a bit of a mystery.

Of course the 50% tax rate is the icing on the cake you actually want a tax rate re-introduced that brings in less tax that is based on pure cynical spite from a Labour party who never actually had this tax rate during their 13 years of financial mismanagement, I often wonder how Labour is a shoe-in for Stoke-on-Trent every election when I read opinions like yours it's not hard to see why. And by the way I can tell you of nearly 700 UK families who don't thank the Lord for Tony Blair.

There seems to be a real problem with the benefits system if you own your own home, my friend worked really hard to keep hers when her husband left, but when she got ill she was entitled to virtually nothing because equity counted as savings. Basically she would have had to sell her house and spend what equity there was in it before being entitled to anything. If she had done so she would then have been another case for the government to rehouse, which is madness. Hence she had to survive for two months on friends handouts, despite having paid into the system for 2o plus years.

i will have to check my mathematics but i am not sure how a 50% tax rate for high earners will bring in less than a rate of 40% unless you swallowed the tory con that all the high earners will upsticks and leave the country? what complete utter horseshit, oh and as mp's are on the higher tax band they voted themselves a rise.

Labour brought in their 50p rate as they left office. I believe the Tories cut it to 45p Less sometimes means more

Labour also of course doubled the lowest tax rate from 10% to 20%. The London bombings happened after the invasion of Iraq and afghanistan. There may have been a case for removing Saddam but it wasn't 10-15 years after his use of chemical weapons and it had nothing to do with 9\11.

It's more an understanding of how tax works rather than maths. This isn't about people on £150k a year this is about the superich they can avoid tax by just leaving their money in companies and not taking dividends or just becoming non resident for uk tax purposes.
