The two defeats that have left their biggest mark on me are:
- the play-off semi against Gillingham. Rob Styles made Atkinson look fair and impartial that day. Don't think I have ever seen a ref'ing performance so determined to favour one side more than the other.
- the Auto-Glass area final against Vale at the Vic. We looked certain on paper to win, another Wembley trip beckoned. How many chances did Steino miss (including the penalty)? How many attacks did Vale have (1?). Still a scar there to this very day.

Was it Paul Conner who went through at 2-0, only for his shot to beat the keep but bobble wide? Whoever it was, that was definitely the single most agonizing moment I've had watching Stoke. Fleeting hope crushed in one slow motion trickle wide

I think Gunnarson put in probably one of the best performances ever by a Stoke player. Wasn't just holding the defence together at the end, was pretty much the defence.

I still think Citeh's goal at Wembley in 2011 should have been ruled out for offside! Not the man who made the shot, but the one blocking Sorro's view!

Nah the City game was an anti climax all round, so the goal didnt kill me. We had our final already in the semi!
Gutters -
Any loss to Vale, but the FA Cup game in the rain (Dave Regis and the mud) was gutting The 4-0 playoff defeat to Walsall was really disappointing! The team had no heart at all at the end of a long season
There are just too many. Now I am thinking of it I am in a bad mood....

One that springs to mind is losing to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the dying minutes after Rory scored. I felt sick as a pig afterwards.

Another vote for the Dave Regis shot in the mud.
Time slowed down for that moment, so that in a fraction of a second we experienced:
* the despair of sliding timidly towards a derby defeat * the glimmer of hope as Regis suddenly finds himself one-on-one with the keeper * the frustration as Regis fluffs his lines by shooting too close to the keeper, and knowing immediately that we probably wouldn't get another chance to avoid defeat * the surprise and utter joy of seeing Musselwhite mistime his dive and leap stupidly over the ball * the agony of wondering whether Regis's shot is on target or whether it will go wide * the ecstasy of realising the ball is going the right side of the post * the confusion as the ball stops dead * the anger as Peter Swan slides back and kicks it clear with a big grin on his face * the despair of realising not only are we sliding timidly towards derby defeat, but that the pain of this very moment will haunt us for the rest of our lives.

Birmingham City - 7-0 thrashing, whole squad on the transfer list, fans attacking players and storming the Directors Box. We were staring into the abyss with seemingly no way back.
Bristol Rovers - 4-0 followed shortly after by a similar thumping away at Gillingham. I left those games thinking it was only a matter of time before we ended up in the Conference.
Losing 2-0 to a 9 man Milwall side was also fairly gut wrenching.

Comfortably the most pissed off I've ever been at a football match that night was. I've hated Gary Parker ever since that day. I was expecting us to lose in the FA cup final so that wasn't as crushing as some of the others mentioned on here so far. All the play off defeats were hard to take and I can still remember that twat Robin Van der Laan running off towards the Vale fans in the gayest way ever in that Autoglass trophy defeat. I remember being particularly pissed off when we lost at home to Liverpool in the Rumbelows Cup? after drawing 2-2 at Anfield back in the early 90's,I genuinely thought we would beat them and that didn't happen very often if at all back in those days.

That Millwall game was a complete embarrassment Dave and i remember going down to London for the weekend on the Friday morning and being excited with the news on the way that we'd signed Lee Collins from Villa

As I recall, he skipped merrily towards the Stoke End paddock, flicking his hair like the woman from the Pantene Two-in-One shampoo advert, while pointing his fingers like extremely gay guns.

Can't really argue with the OP's choices. Another one that stands out is the 0-1 defeat to Chester in our last home game of the 91-92 season. An absolute gut-wrencher at the time, even if we did return stronger the following season. The feeling in the pit of my stomach five minutes from the end of the Cardiff play off semi final wasn't pleasant either, though that ended well.

2 games against Palace stick out for me as well, firstly in the season Pulis kept us up when they scored late on and i thought we'd blown it with only the Reading game left. Then the season we got promoted when we lost on the Monday night to Warnocks team i thought we blown it also.Oh we of little faith.
