Literally because there sure as hell isn't any video footage of it. Whilst the big match had their cameras following sunderland and brighton the only visual reminders of our momentous last gasp promotion are camera stills. Hard to believe in today's saturated and cash rich coverage of everything football that were no cameras filming at meadow lane that day. Can't think of many classic occasions in modern day stoke history that aren't documented on film, maybe the uefa cup home tie against ajax and the two legs against kaiserslauten. Luckily we had 17,000 there or whatever who can carry the memory with them!

Bizarre fact to that season
1st game of season Cambridge v Stoke ,Paul Richardson scored a diving header 2 mins from time to give Stoke a 1:0 victory
Last game of the season Notts County v Stoke and guess who scored a diving header with 2 mins to go to give Stoke a 1:0 victory
That season was great

I wonder if anyone has a link to that ? They were all on the pitch at Wrexham celebrating their own late victory and unaware of our last gasp winner

I was there as a 16yr old with my mate,my brother and my dad.....we had a big banner and went on the pitch at the end...like many others. The drive home comprised of me hanging out of the passenger window with the banner flying and my dad peeping his horn constantly at passers by lol. My mum was at the door to greet us when we all arrived back with the biggest grins ever If Carling made football matches....

Most of the Stokies were on that open terrace so any singing just drifted off in to the ether and Delilah had not yet been adopted. In fact I couldn't tell you what was sung that day The strong sheet of the time mainly comprised songs with more than a hint of menace so they weren't really a good fit for genteel Notts County.

I was there, it's etched in my memory for as long as I live, for me it was an even bigger mental than the 72 cup final and that takes some beating ???? I remember getting crushed at the front at the end as every Stoke fan tried to get onto the pitch and the police tried in vain to stop us.

I was there, with my Dad, brother & Uncle. The day before my Grandad had died who was a big Stokie, followed them everywhere, season ticket in the Boothen Stand. The day after the match would be 1year to the day since I was knocked over by a car on the A34. We arrived in the knick of time, the turnstiles we choose to go in take us to the left hand paddock as the Stoke fans would see the rest of the ground. I still had'nt recovered from my accident the paddock was gettin full, my father ask a copper if we could go in the end opposite the Stokies. Now, there is'nt many who can say they saw that sight with their own eyes, especially when we scored.

A Sunderland perspective www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/wrexham-away-1979.569411/IIRC it was the Wrexham club tannoy announcer who let us all know that Stoke had scored late on and we were, in fact, not promoted. He did it in a smarmy, vindictive way too, which did nothing for the sense of anger that disappointment that spread through the Sunderland fans. Fuckin wanker  Brilliant...... Well done Tannoy Man

Will never forget that day as long as I live, was on the pitch at the end of the game with the old man which is ironic as I sit here visiting the old man in his dementia state(asleep at the minute). The scenes in derby that day were fantastic with the amount of cars, vans and buses on their way to Nottingham.with scarves out the windows. It was even better on the way back as well.So glad the old man took me to watch Gordon Banks in the early seventies and the rest is history experiencing days like this.

Drove down from Sheffield where I was at uni and met up with my then girlfriend and her younger brother who ran onto the pitch and for a few minutes was lost to us. He resurfaced and I recall it being a great day but tense as hell.
Anyone got any snaps?

I went with a load of mates in two cars, we got there just as the pubs opened and found a brilliant boozer in a precinct with a bookies and a chippy, Stokies everywhere.
Went on the pitch at the end with the rest, absolutely fantastic day.

I was on that open terrace right behind the goal! I just remember an atmosphere of nervousness, maybe me! My memory is shit. But when the score came through from Wrexham then we made some noise the rest of the time was nervous energy! That and most people were really pissed! I think the train I got was 9.30!

The highlights of the Wrexham - Sunderland match the next day definitely showed the Sunderland fans celebrating on the pitch and then the realisation that they probably weren't going up when they heard the Stoke result.
The Big Match Revisited may have cut it to save time, but I remember the scenes vividly on Star Soccer the next day (which, incidentally showed that big Midlands derby, West Brom v Man United).

I was one of the ones moved from the main behind the goal terrace into the right hand side paddock after the crash barriers collapsed, i reckon about 17K Stokies there that day.
I remember Durban running onto the side of the field and screaming at the players when he realised that Sunderland had scored and seconds later the move started that we scored from. The trip back was a convoy of cars, vans, mini buses and even a removal lorry full of stokies, some we on the roof as it was going along, great memories.

This match, believe it or not was my very first away game.12 of us in a Transit van from Knutton club. Ace memories. Cattle truck from Werrington E&C Mears, the score board getting bricked at half time, the poor bloke in the box sticking any numbers up to try to stop the bricks hitting him, the barrier at the front giving way and the crush it caused the pigs trying to push the stokies back, coppers helmets flying in the air as they were overwhelmed, people pissing where they stood due to being packed in like sardines. At the station the pigs letting dogs loose on Stoke fans and a hail of bricks smashing the windows of an industrial building across the road by the pigs, fencing kicked down to get into the station, proper owd school away day.
