Right, no fannying about you lot. What is the best Sci-Fi film ever made?
And no Minnie, Morph from Tony Hart doesn't count as "a flim".
My choice:
I keep telling thee, and no-one listens...it's John Carpenters's 1974 low budget epic. "Dark Star". By a mile.

Best , Alien when it came out was pretty good. Worst has to be 2001 a Space Odyssey. Now that is some mind fuck acid trip that I wouldn't care to repeat.

I tell you what though, the quality of the spaceships (i.e. the modelmaking) in that film set a new standard. As did the quality of the camera lenses used. I'm a massive Kubrick fan and I've had a bit of a go at film making with a Canon 5D. That bloke was really pushing the boundaries of film technology at the time. In a later film, Barry Lyndon, Kubrick used prime lenses that were so "fast" i.e. low f-stop 1:08 Zeiss lenses, they had only been previously used by NASA in satellites for low light spying. This enabled unlit shooting - using just candlelight. Remarkable. I don't think this feat has ever been repeated in a big budget film to date. Even today a 1:1.2 lens is considered as fast as hell.
That's just one of the reasons why Stanley Kubrick was a genius. On the whole a poor film though.

An oldie "Forbidden Planet" Basically it's Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in space. Cracking film though, still very watchable. Bish still dresses like Dr. Morbeus.

The Day the Earth Stood Still. When Worlds Collide. Bladerunner (Though the original book is better). The first two are classics ....the Day the Earth Stood Still with Michael Rennie was brilliant , a great shame it wasn't made in colour

I think the first Planet of the Apes film is my favourite. The moods created by the music and the memorable back drops give the film a great back ground, as the story unfolds. The clever script co-wrote by Rod Serling, makes sly comments about race relations, the generation gap, religion and the role of government. It might even be described as sci-fi satire. It's stuffed full of memorable dialogue and one of the best twists in cinema history. Gotta love it for that

Dredd(the newish one,not the cheesy Stallone one),not sure if it's pure sci-fi though. The whole Alien franchise is fantastic as well.

Walter was good as Admiral Nelson in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea too. Richard Baseheart will be turning in his grave.... Just mentioned him .....brilliant series , his portrayal of Admiral Nelson was probably the better one .....David Hedison was probably the better Captain Crane as well

Sometimes I enjoy reading the book after watching the movie / tv series , it enables you to put faces to the characters and makes the reading more enjoyable , not always of course

But it is.Have you read the book? The film is very good, especially in how a future city would look.(Always thought this was how Mega City 1 would look in Judge Dredd) But it isn't as good as the book.
