Us Stokies are not too well thought of either. Check out the Urban Dictionary - (perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek, I hope?!) Stokies Aggresive youths abiding in the city of Stoke-on-Trent. Typically drinking cider, shouting at cars and stealing signposts, these hooligans like nothing better than to harass passers-by, policemen and inanimate objects.
Stokies are merely a more advanced version of your common Chav, having learnt new ways to steal, vandalise and walk foolishly.
The Stokie should be avoided at all cost, they attack without warning and are particularly persistant at catching their quarry should it choose to turn tail and flee.

Sorry mick. I often agree with you but you're wrong about the area thing. The general consensus outside of Stoke is that it's a total shithole where everyone is unemployed and every woman is a single mother with 4 kids from 4 different fathers. Certainly people down South think it. The image of our team I agree is very much to do with our previous style of football, but should we care? Absolutely not. What we achieved under Tony was remarkable, in such a short space of time. This is our new chapter and with a few years of good football under Sparky, someone else will be the thuggish team that everyone hates. It was Bolton a few years ago, and Wimbledon a few years before that. it isn't really that nice an area though is it? i remember when i was a kid loving it playing footy behind my gran's house on the cobbles, skateboarding at Longton park, going shopping in Hanley...nowadays you go to Stoke and it's all been concreted over for the A500 and Hanley is a dump and the other towns are all boarded up as all the shops have closed down. it may not be a case of four kids with four different dads but there's no way you can say it's a nice area!!! re: the football, totally agree. i don't care and never did. the way we played which gave us this tag is what kept us up while other teams trying to play "The proper way" fell by the wayside and went down. worked lovely for us. Is there anywhere nice in stoke, as in nice area?

Maybe I'm not qualified to comment having moved away from North Staffs (Newcastle) in 1966 and still have fond memories of playing in marl holes, air raid shelters, and in the tanks at Apedale as a kid, shopping in Hanley for rock'n'roll records at Sherwins; I could go on. But I think posts on here do the club and the area a disservice. The area may be run down due to the decline of coal mining, steel, and the export of manufacturing to China but it will "come back" and both the area and the club have a wonderful heritage, which, when someone is smart enough to exploit, will see revival.
There are many football fans around the country who have a huge respect for Stoke City. I reported on here earlier this year that I met a South African osteopath who was not a football fan but well aware of Stoke's success last season and I regularly meet people who are very jealous because their town/city doesn't have a Premiership side.
Stoke's image isn't as black a it's being portrayed.

At least we have an image unlike most other clubs of our size who are just in the premier league to make up the numbers, maybe getting patronised for one season like Swansea or Southampton then forgotten about. Anyone who thinks the rest of football will love us if we play some nice, passing football is deluded, especially if we keep up this feud with Arsenal. no-one gives a fuck about this "Feud" with Arsenal apart from Arsenal (and most of them aren't that arsed, they just enjoy booing us). no-one hated us before we came up and played Pulis-ball for 5 years without any effort of evolving from it. if we hadn't played like that then we wouldn't be hated by anyone now..really is that simple mate. anyone who thinks it's some deep seated hatred simply because it's Stoke and who believes the footballing world even care that we hate Arsenal is deluded! You've clearly never read an opposition messageboard ahead of a game then! From the word go in the Prem you can guarantee that their threads will include the following: Six fingered inbred mutant freaks Knuckle dragging neanderthal fans Benefit scrounging jobless alcoholic thieves Backwards shithole, BNP supporting 1970s timewarp Godforsaken dump like an ex-Soviet Eastern Bloc country Throwing rocks at the moon The best thing about Stoke is the road out of it

Our image is utter shit. Like seriously. It's going to take decades to shake it off. some people actually believe we only just survived last year and have no clue we finished ninth. And even then they refuse to believe we did it by any other method than a wind machine, snow, long grass, a narrowed pitch, snapping players in half and then eating them alive. Even without Rob Huth for most of the season!

It will take at least a decade and Muniesa dribbling from box to box and scoring at least once this season. Please not Ryan an Huth together again. There are people on here moaning about cheating at the WC, but we need to drop that shirt pulling crap, once and for all.

If you are going to worry about our reputation then you need to seperate fact from fiction. Why not Ryan and Huth? They have proven to be amongst the best partnerships in the league over several years. Because they are not easy on the eye for neutrals?

The only reason I care about our image is because the stupid twats who referee in the Premier League are influenced by it. Our players get booked, and therefore sent off, when others would escape even being penalised.

To be honest isn't it an image the whole area has anyway? Pretty much everybody I speak to outside of Stoke considers the area to a grim midland shithole and to a degree that image is placed on the team. We're not going to change the image of the area anytime soon but maybe a couple of seasons of 'attractive' football might help. To be honest the area is a shithole. The city centre is an absolute embarrassment. I work all over the country and get told its a shithole all the time and they are right. Its a fuckin tip. But dont worry our council are sorting it :-D Just vote the usual way for the next 100 years and they will sort it :-D I get told we are poor mancs rather than a midland club geographically. I don't really give a shit what people say about us but the place is a disgrace

totally agree mate (hence my bit saying not the fault of the inhabitants in my first post) i'll still have good memories of the place till my dying day' You could say that the inhabitants do SHARE some of the blame by consistently voting in successive collections of clowns and allowing them to make the shambles of which you complain - unless you are saying that SOT would have become a shambles no matter who you voted for (ie there's no men/women of integrity, vision and achievement in SOT) The last 3 lines are mine in answer to mmlc's post - somehow managed to get them blocked in with his post - sorry

They're a formidable force. Sure, they need to curb their shirt-pulling tendencies now and again but I don't know of any defender who doesn't pull shirts on corners. I don't think it's quite on the same level as the cheating in the world cup.

Hehe, well you can thank the council for that. Those dinosaurs have been destroying our wonderful little place for a long time. You only have to look at the complete shambles that is Hanley bus station (new and old in fact) to see how badly these clowns run the city. We've been saying that for a long time though and unfortunately, nothing get's done. I remember Newcastle being a vibrant town full of shops, and a bustling high street. Nowadays, half the shops are shut and the place is normally empty. That's progression for you Just on the topic, I was visiting from Oz at Christmas, seeing the family and getting a few Stoke games in and I went down Hope St. What a bloody difference to growing up as a kid. Sherwins Music or something like that at the top, then down to the Joke Shop. Ahh, the Joke Shop, used to absolutely love it growing up, full of brilliant stuff. And what about the centre of Hanley with the old meat/veggie market. Nowadays, it feels like a dump so I bugger off up to Leek where things still seem largely the same. Anyone else feel the same?

There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Huth and Shawcross together, are perhaps the most formidable defensive partnership, not just in SCFC history, but stats show that they are up there in Premiership history too. Of course, everyone remembers Denis Smith, but Shawcross and Huth (particularly with Bego in goal) have nothing left to prove, to anyone. Proper in your face, full on defending. Both fantastic athletes, both on a similar wavelength. But still, i'd like to see a change for a more mobile CB pairing. Shawcross and Huth. Legends.

I also love that our image is terrible i think its due to the amount of times we have battled to win/draw when we were wrote of before the match as well as the pulisball. Also stoke not being a great place for players to come and live.

Hope Street used to have three guitar shops which I visited regularly. One is now a porn shop and the other two are really struggling for business. Sad really. I've been going to those shops since I was a young lad and my father bought one of his first guitars from Route66 before it was called Route66, that might have been Sherwin's in fact. As I said, it's now an 'adult themed' shop. The rest of Hope Street is just a pile of shit. It's had various shops come and go within a few weeks (computer shops, games shops, even the odd sport shops) but very few have remained open. Just really sad to see somewhere that provided thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of young guitarists over several generations all around Stoke on trent with their first instrument is so horrifically falling to pieces. I think it's inevitable that the two other guitar shops will die and that will be that.
