I've not been to Malta, but my Great-Uncle George was there during WWII when it was bombarded by the nazis in an attempt to control the waterways of the Med. I think he got a touch of PTSD from that one, cause he "opted out" of society when he came back to Bucknall... Also, one of my favourite paintings is in the Cathedral of Malta. The beheading of John the Baptist by Caravaggio, shear madness...

Hi,
It's Adie Bunn here, saw you all at Pete's for the home Man City game. Hope you are all enjoying the proper football this season. Must admit it's been a breath of fresh air for me. Looking forward to another visit when I am next on Gozo.
Cheers, Adie

I went there in the 90's with the ex imagine my disappointment to see two gorgeous blondes in their early twenties who were both very well endowed in the breast department, only to see a no topless sticker on the sun loungers!!! no trip to Valletta is complete without a trip to the labour club for a lunchtime beer, I am sure I walked into a film set with marlon brando!!!

Back from a squash tour to Malta yesterday. We played against the Marsa Sports Club. We stayed in the Inter Continental Hotel at St Georges Bay. It's changed a bit since I was last there. Seemed to be thousands of leggy Scandinavian girls and their pissed up fellow students tottering around in the bar area with few clothes on and I counted 12 "Gentlemens" clubs within 100 yards of one another. It was a bit rough to be perfectly honest. Mixed in with them were quite a few bull necked Maltese characters who looked like they had over cooked it in the gym. We ended up in the Nordic bar, a steaming mass of pissed up humanity singing along to Bon Jovi and other middle of the road rock anthems. Kind of like a Scandinavian night out in Cleethorpes

I've spent entire 2009 in Malta. Lived in Msida and worked in Sliema. Times Square was my favorite pub. I used to watch a lot footy there. It was good mix of supporers there, great atmosfere. I will msg you when I'm back to Malta for holidays in the future. Cheers.

Must admit that I hadn't been to Malta for a good few years and did find it much more 'touristy' than I remembered it had been previously. On the other hand it was the first time I had been to Gozo and found that to be very quiet, not as commercial as the main island and much more like the old Malta that I remembered. So for an old bugger like me Gozo wins it hands down. Cheers, Adie

Not wanting to be at odds with other Stokies, but I for one will never go to Malta while they shoot endangered &/or migrating birds. I know people in glass houses etc but I find their attitude obscene & offensive.

What do migrating birds have to do with this thread ? I don't shoot birds. The only birds I like are not the feathered types I just support stoke and this thread is just about that - stoke city

I've just come back from Malta. What a lovely place, Gozo too. I was on the pitch after Valetta won the league (or cup, we couldn't really figure out what game we were watching) good fun!

I know people in glass houses etc but I find their attitude obscene & offensive. People in glass houses definitely shouldn't shoot birds. Recipe for disaster. I can quite imagine that Birds would try eating Maltesers so I can see why the folk there have taken up arms against them.

The bird life in Malta is similar to the sea-life which is pretty much non existent. A very nice place with lots to see and do , but practically devoid of nature which is a great shame.
It should be a lesson to us all , but sadly that day has long gone. One more example of mans destructive effect on the planet.

I not sure about what happens these days , but where ever you went around Malta , you used to see bird traps for catching migrating Robins which they stuffed and sold in their shops as gifts for the tourists , as if that wasn't bad enough the traps caught all other types of birds as well which just died , very sad , people used to buy these Robins , not realising that they were real and had been trapped , possibly this practice has ceased in recent years as I haven't seen any evidence of it on the last couple occasions I've visited the Island .

What Capto is referring to is an article in one of the papers a few days ago by Chris Packham regarding the 'hobby' of some Maltese to blast literally anything out of the skies that flies over the islands on their migratory routes from Africa to Europe. Probably the reason why Mumf and others didn't see much wildlife there. Cheers, Adie
