The forgotten man of the 70s teams. A local lad who came into the side, he was a decent player overshadowed by Ritchie, Greenhoff and Geoff Hurst, who must have signed about 73/74. Hurst was past his best but still scored a few. Seem to remember he was known as Chuffer as he had a habit of blowing his cheeks out when he was playing.
Garth Crooks also went from Stoke City to Tottenham, but can't think of too many who have played for both clubs.

If you look on the Spurs site there is a lot of information about us and then - including a long list of players who have played for both clubs. A lot of surprises actually, more than you would think but not all obvious.

How was Ian Moores received at Spurs? He was a lovely fella but he added new meaning to the word "cumbersome" My biggest memory of him is that he scored a scrambled (typical!) winner (1-0) for us when we played a "home" game against Middlesboro at Port Vale's ground after the roof blew down on our stand just before we were due to play (and ultimately beat) Spurs in the FA Cup. Took his beard with him to Spurs as I remember. And scored a hat-trick when Spurs beat Bristol Rovers 9-0 but even then was overshadowed by Colin Lee who scored 4. Must have been a relief to most Spurs fans when Moores shuffled off to Orient which was much more his level. After that from what I remember you signed Garth Crooks from us and Steve Archibald and had a far more potent front line. Garth was always good for a penalty as I remember, throwing his head like he had been shot when tackled. Of course Ian Moores tragically died from cancer aged 43. I had a long chat with him in Sammi Belles nightclub in NUL one night after he had retired and looking back on it now although I didn't know it at the time he wasn't long for this world at that point RIP Ian

Both great acquisitions for Stoke. Robertson goes down in my book as one of the most underrated Stoke players of all time. Maybe because he played at the same time as Huddy and Greenhoff. He was in great form when he tragically broke his leg. He had terrific pace, great crossing ability and a shot like a rocket. Good memories of him.

Excellent player and member what was undoubtedly (for many) the best midfield of any team in the first division when Stoke achieved 5th place , 2 years running. If I remember correctly there were 5 Stoke players broke/severely damaged a leg in the year before Stoke were relegated. (Can anyone else remember that?)

Factoid for you
Ian Moores is buried 4 yards from my dear old dad in Biddulph in St Lawrences churchyard.
Mooro has a large football on his gravestone, my owd has his beloved old Sunderland badge on his (was a Mackem from Stanley, Co Durham, moved here as a child)
I can remember Ian Moores as a regular visitor to Knype CC when I was a teenager playing there, a popular guy and well thought of by friends and acquaintances locally in town.

Spot on about Jimmy Robertson - a quality act on the right wing. My main memory of Ian Moores is he was always getting caught off side! Which is unfair as he did score some good goals for Stoke - including a brace in a 4-0 thumping of Man Citeh if I remember correctly. A good player - but not really good enough for the top flight. I think the Spurs article got it right in noting he had his best time as afootballer at Leyton Orient. Tragedy to die so youg.

Jimmy Robertson is one of my all time favourites (loved the bloke actually), great winger and all round good un! Ian Moores was o.k. In my book too. Brings back good memories for me. Oh! And by the way you young un's, if you read the opening post, take note of the line (one of the most entertaining sides in the land), because at that time were. Proud to be a Potter, that's where we're going again IMHO! Goooaaarrrnnnn Stoke!!!

Remember that Ian Moores was following in the footsteps of the great John Ritchie who we had just lost. A very hard act to follow. He was not quite ready for it.
But considering his lack of experience he didn't do too badly at all. He was only 21 and scored 13 goals in his first full season.. It was frustrating to watch though as Osgood was Waddo's preferred replacement which fell through at the last minute. Would have been the missing pieces the jigsaw

I was surprised at last years game that the Spurs supporters didn't seem to know who Jimmy Robertson was, as there was no reaction to his name being announced or when they went around the pitch.

Sorry to hear about your father passing, however long ago mate. Thanks for sharing the information though. Appreciate that. I spoke to Ian Moores a few times when i saw him around the Lane. He was a lovely friendly guy. I got the impression he would rather have stayed at Stoke for longer than he did. He spoke very highly of your club. Somewhere I have a great photograph which he signed for me. I was of him standing with Ralph Coates. I dont know if any of you guys would even know Coates. It was a funny picture because Ian Moores was a natty dresser. He had cream flares on a loud shirt and with his blond bearded looks could have been a film star or country and western star to look at him. Ralph Coates, on the other hand, was a small guy in comparison to Moores and was nearly bald apart from a few strands of wayward hair he used to try to come across to hide his baldness. Ian Moores signed the photo for me but Ralph Coates refused to.,

No worries HH - 11 years this August for the owd, scarily all around him are his friends and colleagues who worked in the pits etc together all of a similar age in their 50s and 60s.
Different times now thankfully (we will all have RSI to our wrists and bad necks/backs instead!)
But their day, working in dust, gas and crap, plus dangerous conditions - plus they all smoked about 500 fags a day (Moorsey was a smoker too?) wont have helped!
Of course back then your footballers were of the people, nowadays they are mainly egotistical overpaid tossbags who complain at playing 180 mins football per week, never mind a 65 hour weeks shift down a mine! :-)

I spoke to Ian Moores in a Newcastle bar in the 90s. He told me what a dream it was to play with his idol Jimmy Greenhoff. His tales of his career were interesting and not a sign of regret. A lovely and approachable guy to speak to.

Gary Brooke. Remember his debut at the Vic (Mills/Ball relegation season)
He was shite!
The two keepers (Parks and Segers) didnt have great spells here either from memory! Parks in particular was a mare?

I think the views of Moores are a little unfair. He played at the top level for us and Spurs and could hold his head up for what he achieved. He was underrated in my opinion. Didn't he end up in Greece (Cyprus?) playing with Terry Mcdermott?
As for Jimmy Roberston, I couldn't agree more. A proper right winger who played some great footy for us.

Hi. I saw Ian Moores play many times for us & was at the Bristol Rovers game when he scored his hat-trick but unfortunately the fans never really took to him. This is a decent read. www.mehstg.com/moores2.htmAs for 'they played for Spurs & Stoke' this list is (fairly) accurate. Paul Allen Garry Brooke Joe Brough George Clawley Garth Crooks Peter Crouch Matthew Etherington Ray Evans Márton Fülöp Eiður Guðjohnsen Ken Hancock Archie Heggarty Stephen Kelly Fred Latham Billy Leech Gerry Mahon Ian Moores James Morton Wilson Palacios Tony Parks Jimmy Robertson Hans Segers Paul Stewart Charlie Wilson Jonathan Woodgate No idea how the game will go. Will the Stoke players be on their deck-chairs? Spurs still need 7 pts from our last three games to be guaranteed 6th & thus qualification for the much maligned Europa League (assuming Man U win their last 4 games). We might possibly sneak a win by the odd goal in a close game.

BTW - are you sure you saw the Ian Moores' hat trick? I ask because your profile suggests you were just a few months old at the time!

As for Adam 'storm in a tea-cup', i doubt Sandro will be playing so unlikely to be anything untoward on that front.

There are way more players to have played for both clubs than I remember. Can't believe I forgot Crouch and Palacios. As well as Palacios, you stitched us up with Paul Stewart and Gerry Mahon. The former was certainly well passed his best when he arrived here.
Can't recall Tony Parkes at Stoke either? From memory he was your UEFA cup goalie hero wasn't he? Seem to remember watching in a pub in Liverpool and he saved the winning pen?
Didn't even realise Jimmy Robertson had played for Spurs. I assumed we got him from a Scottish side. Great player for Stoke and another who I am pretty sure stayed in the Potteries. More than a handy golfer I believe.
