I actually think it wouldn't be totally out of whack to suggest that Paul Gascoigne was probably the most technically gifted footballer to play for England, however I voted for Stan.

Anyone else think it's ironic that we have a thread bemoaning modern football, whilst at the same time calling Stokies to vote for Stan as the greatest footballer?
Seriously, who gives a shit?
Matthews, Finney, Mortenson, Charlton, Banks, Best, Edwards, Franklin et al are legends of the game. Does it really need some pointless vote to decide who is the best?

Love Mysticaldescent"s "it's turning into a rout now" few posts back. Stan now has 5 times more votes than Finney who is his nearest rival. Presumably Telegraph were hoping Finney would win as it makes another story "Finney, the greatest footballer ever.............". Well us Stokies have scuppered that for sure.

Bobby Moore was not knighted, wrong that he was not Died very young though KKK. It may have been on the cards if he was still around, but wasn't he something of a drinker? That stuff, charity work etc is all taken into account isn't it? On balance, I still think he should have been knighted though.

Voted for Sir Stan, but my father and uncle have always maintained that if Neil Franklin had not gone off to Bogota Billy Wright would never have got near 100 caps for England as our Neil was a far far superior player. In one of the tributes to Sir Tom I read he said Franklin was the best centre half he ever saw. Spot on, mate. Voted and your right my old man always said Franklin was an awesome player as you can see from my name

Voted and your right my old man always said Franklin was an awesome player as you can see from my name To add to Franklin's comment, my old man also said Neil Franklin was one of the true greats. I also remember one of my school masters (at Ellison Street Junior School) in the 1950s lecturing us youngsters on the importance of reading books. His point being, that had Neil Franklin read more about what he was getting himself into in South America he would not have thrown away his career as a top flight England international

He has competition. But if you are judging true unquestionable greatness there are only 11 English players to choose from. Charlton is the only English player who won everything.

You can tell we've got no game this weekend just gone! By that reasoning Banks, Matthews, Finney and countless others didn't win everything so can't be the greatest. Of course it depends on the team you played for and your nationality and so your argument is flawed. Alex Stepney won the European Cup but is he better than Banks? No way!

No he wasn't better than Banks. But he didn't win the World Cup!! Also the whole story of Bobby Charlton oozes greatness. Overcame tragedy and became a third of Busby's holy trinity. The others are great players too I hasten to add.
