I think Shotton could be good back up for us now without splashing a lot of money! I'd rather sell Wilko as he is always injured anyway!

The next Gareth Bale according to Pulis I'm not sure Tone ever quite said exactly that although he did once mention both of their names in the same sentence

Shotton gets far too much undeserved stick.
At a time when we're desperately short of defensive cover, I think we should keep him around for a bit longer yet. I'd much rather have him stepping in at centre half if Shawcross or Wilson get injured than see Muniesa there.

I'm firmly in the "Shotton is a decent right back" camp. I was sad to see him loaned out as I hoped he would get a game or two at right back to give us the chance to see Cameron in the defensive midfield role. Maybe it can now happen.

Some people tend to judge him as a person rather than a footballer and, whilst he's no world beater, he's certainly not as shit as some make him out to be. He has had a couple of decent runs in the side since breaking through and has struggled at other times.
Also, on the personality side, I've spoken to him a couple of times and has always come across as a decent enough lad.

He did actually start playing well at RB and was massively improving, personally I was a little surprised we let him go on loan.

I think the context was full backs who can play on the wing and/or vice versa. He is not the most gifted footballer you will ever see but he is a decent athlete with an excellent engine and hence the ability to get up and down and therefore make a nuisance of himself against all but the very best sides.

Welcome back Ryan. I'm glad he's returned and am interested to see if his game can continue to improve. I was surprised that he went out on loan because his performances towards the end of last season were on an upward trajectory, and thought he suited the profile of the 'New Direction'. Youngish Academy product. It didn't work out playing him on the wing, but I did think his overall game and potential as an attacking wing back improved as a result of the experience. I have always been impressed with Shotton's defensive positioning and speed, bearing in mind the quality of opponents he's faced. Last season I only saw him given a really hard time in that Wigan Horrorshow at the feet of Maloney. Other than that he's held his own against the finest left sided attackers and wing backs. The distribution and 'moving forward' part of his game was inconsistent, but it has to be considered within the context of a largely static and penned back set up. The Mark Hughes crew has brought the best out of Shawcross, Cameron and Wilson so far, and I'd love to see what magic they could do with Shotton. During his development I've seen Ryan play competently at left or right back, and centre back. So is useful as back up at the very least. I do miss a good throw-in too. When he first took over the throw-ins he was trying too hard to do a Rory, and even Rory's had become predictable by that stage. Again in those last few games at the tail end of last season his circus cannon had become a lot more effective. He was finding his own chuck. I'm frustrated at our continuing impotency from the deadball situation. I get the feeling that some folk use Ryan as a totem for their hatred of Tone, but these are new times with different coaching methods and expectations, I'd like to see Shotton given the benefit of this. I could be misguided, but even if he is earmarked for sale he won't have cost us much, it'll be a plus on the balance sheet. He has never shirked a shift for us. He's got a good attitude on the pitch, I don't think I've seen him booked or petulant. He never loses it. He fits the 'home grown academy nurtured' future profile of the Club to a tee.
Anyway, I welcome Ryan back and wish him all the best for 2014.

Think Ryan is good cover both at right back and central defence. Would keep him at least till the summer.

Yes thinking about it a sensible comparison from Tony, I bet Gareth Bale would be well impressed mentioned in the same sentence as Ryan Shotton
