Looking back at the games we've played so far we should have quite a few more points which we've dropped due to bad luck, inability to score and other factors. The game against Fulham should have been won, the game against Norwich we were both awful so a point a piece would have been a fairer result, we were unlucky to lose against The Shit and could have won against Hull in the strength of a very strong second half performance. All in all IMO it would be fair to say that we should have been sitting on 20 points by now

Looking closely at the games we've played compared to the amount of points that we have gained I would say that we have dropped somewhere in the region of 30

Last season we sat on 29 points after 19 games having played what was the "difficult" games. The expectation was a similar if not bigger points tally in the second half of the season to give us a 50+ points total and top 10 finish. Then the Stoke City factor kick in and the rest is history. If we get to 19 games on 22-23 points the expectation will be 40+ points tally again. But who knows we might hit consistency and have a good second half. Don't know what our run in games are.

It is a bit of a futile exercise really. It is easy to think of the points we could have/should have picked up and ignore the points we could have/should have dropped. For example, away at Swansea we were very lucky to get the draw and, if we are honest, we probably didn't deserve the draw at home to Southampton. So there are 3 points we were lucky to get - and I'm sure we could find others if we tried hard enough.
What is probably true is that a comparatively small improvement in our performances would push us quite a way up the table. But the league is so tight this season amongst the middle 12 clubs, that many of them could say the same.

Chelsea could (probably should) have buried us in the first half. Just for balance, like

I don't think we have too much to complain about. In terms of bad luck, only Fulham really stands out. In terms of shooting ourselves in the foot then there are a few more points we've dropped but could easily have been beaten by West Brom, Southampton and of course Swansea.

Lucky to beat Palarse too Really? I thought apart from a ropey final few minutes we were comfortable. No one has mentioned the dropped point at Liverpool. I think the general conclusion can be summed up as "swings and roundabouts"

My general feelings so far this season are frustration at Stoke's inability to turn possession into scoring chances and chances into goals, but relief at getting the result in many cases and having 11 players still on the park at the end of the match. The Hull game was a case of Stoke bossed it, but Hull had the better scoring opportunities, but we had Begovic. The logical extension of "what might have been" is that the eventual Champions should have won every match and the bottom team lost every match.

Thought we were lucky against the Baggies as well. As some has said " swings and roundabouts"

I think the general conclusion can be summed up as "swings and roundabouts" I think people's memories tend to be coloured by the result. First half against Palace we were shite and fully deserved to be behind at HT Liverpool had far more chances than Everton did against us, we were highly fortunate to only concede 1. Bego saved us from a right tonking. Yes, if Walters had scored from the spot we'd have got a point, but it would have been thoroughly undeserved. I totally agree about swings and roundabouts - some games we get more than we deserve, some we get less (Fulham!). Overall, we're probably about where we deserve to be.

I think this debate just serves to emphasise how important the January window is for us and the clubs around us. It is probably true that "value" is not as easy to find in January but the situation in the league at the moment is that none of the clubs outside the top 7 or 8 can relax at the moment and who has a good window and who has a bad window will quite likely determine all of the relegation places.
If we can find the missing two or three pieces in our jigsaw then a final position as high as 8th or 9th wouldn't really surprise me. If we don't find those pieces, and other clubs around us do, then it will be squeaky bum time right up to late April or early May.
If I can see this then I'm sure Peter Coates and Sparky can.
